Got a Tip?

8 TV Shows To Watch In December

While we’re positively drowning in movies to desperately catch up on in December, things are looking pretty abysmal by way of television. A plus for those of us looking to catch up on all of the episodes of “Doctor Who” and “Superstore” we’ve been missing, less great for those looking to binge something new once the mayhem of the holiday season lead up starts to die down. That being said, there’s been such a bountiful of wonderful television this year all across the board that if you’re fine tuning some top 10 lists, it may be time to look back at those series you were recommended but passed off for some unlabeled future date. December does hold a few potential gems though and we all rally hard enough, maybe by force of will we can bring down the numbers for “Fuller House” so that it, instead of another relatively entertaining Netflix series, gets axed.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Synopsis: Midge returns to the stage and tries her hand for a new foreign audience. Needless to say the show this season will undoubtedly be just as delightfully funny as the last.
What You Need To Know: One of Amazon’s most popular series of last year, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” finally returns for its second season. The show won multiple Emmy awards this year with series star Rachel Brosnahan winning for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series as well as a Golden Globe for her work on the show. The follow up to the first season will have two episodes more than the last with ten total episodes this time around. Zachary Levi star of DC’s “Shazam!” also joins the cast this season and will likely be an added complexity to Mrs. Maisel’s life.
Release Date: Season 2 premieres on Amazon Prime Video on December 5

Voltron
Synopsis: After saving the Earth, the Paladins embark to prevent Honerva from setting into motion her deadliest plan yet. It’s a race against the clock as the Voltron Coalition gathers from the corners of the galaxy to defend the universe once and for all.
What You Need To Know: The stakes have never been higher for the Paladins than in their eighth and final outing as they face off against one of their greatest threats. An impossibly popular series for the streaming service, “Voltron: Legendary Defender” might not have struck any major critical buzz but the fans online have always been enthusiastic about the animated original. With a voice cast that includes “The Walking Dead’sSteven Yeun and a world that is expansive and full of possible adventure, the expectations for the creative team to nail the finale will be high.
Release Date: Season 8 Premieres on Netflix December 14

The Protector
Synopsis: A city, a hero. An immortal enemy and tens of loyal ones.
What You Need To Know: Netflix embarks on a unique undertaking with new fantasy series “The Protector” starring notable young Turkish actor Cagatay Ulusoy and also stars Ayca Aysin Turan, Hazar Erguclu and Okan Yalabik. The show reportedly got off to a rocky start with Netflix having to reshoot nearly half the series following a change in directors. With so much riding on the show that Netflix touts as “the first Turkish original series,” it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. According to the synopsis, the series centers around a young shopkeeper who discovers a mystical connection to a secret ancient order tasked with protecting Istanbul. The question of whether or not he rises to the challenge will be answered when the show premieres this month.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres on Netflix on December 14

“Counterpart”
Synopsis: Their world has been conspiring. Our world has been compromised.
What You Need To Know: One of the most compelling series airing today, “Counterpart” returns to premium cable channel Starz this month. The series stars J.K. Simmons, Harry Lloyd, Olivia Williams, and Sara Serraiocco. With Simmons taking on a juicy dual role, the show’s premise of a parallel universe introduces a unique storyline that’s described as intense, gripping and highly entertaining. Following a well-received inaugural season, spy thriller “Counterpart” is back for round two this month.
Release Date: Season 2 premieres on Starz on December 14
