Got a Tip?

‘Deadwood’ Film Begins Production As Full Cast & Synopsis Are Revealed

The long-rumored “Deadwood” film seemed too good to be true. It’s been over a decade since the acclaimed HBO series was canceled and the idea of a film conclusion has been talked about for just as long. But even after HBO and creator David Milch confirmed that a “Deadwood” movie was coming, many fans took the cautious approach of “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Well, while there’s nothing to see yet, it does look like HBO means business.

The network announced today that production has officially begun on the “Deadwood” film. The film not only features the return of many members of the original cast, but also is written by series creator Milch and directed by Daniel Minahan, who has a few episodes of the series under his belt as well as “Game of Thrones,” “True Blood,” and “The Newsroom.”

Exact details are still unknown but HBO says the film will show the characters reunited after a decade to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. And as you might expect, things don’t go totally to plan, as old wounds are reopened.

HBO also announced the full cast for the film, which includes Ian McShane (Al Swearengen), Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock), Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), John Hawkes (Sol Star), Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock), Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter), Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran), Robin Weigert (“Calamity” Jane Canary), William Sanderson (E.B. Farnum), Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs), and Gerald McRaney (George Hearst).

In addition to the long list of returning cast members, actress Jade Pettyjohn has been announced as a newcomer, set to play a character named Caroline. Pettyjohn has most recently appeared in the Karyn Kusama film “Destroyer,” and will be seen in the upcoming film “Against All Enemies.”

The untitled “Deadwood” film doesn’t have a release date, but it was previously shooting for a spring 2019 release. That seems unlikely now, but it does sound like HBO wants to get this to fans as soon as possible.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

In the “Deadwood” film, the indelible characters of the series are reunited after ten years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.
