Honestly, no one expected “Deadpool” to become such a monster franchise in such a short amount of time. However, after the 2016 film made a ton of money and introduced the world to the funny superhero with a potty mouth, Fox rushed out a sequel just two years later. And that film, “Deadpool 2,” was even more successful and fully enlisted the character into the hallowed halls of superhero film royalty. But as we enter 2020, it appears that the “Deadpool” freight train has come to a sudden halt, as Fox was purchased by Disney and the studio attempts to figure out what to do next.
And according to a new interview with EW, one of the franchise’s co-writers, Paul Wernick, promises that the future of “Deadpool” is still bright, and most definitely R-rated. Wernick said that it all comes down to scheduling with star Ryan Reynolds and whether or not the writer, along with his partner Rhett Reese, can come up with a quality story.
“I think the party line and truth is we’re all still figuring it out,” said Wernick. “Marvel has promised to continue to let us play in the R-rated ‘Deadpool’ universe, and the hope is that they will also let us veer into the MCU a little bit as well and play in that sandbox. Our feeling and Ryan’s feeling is that it’s got to be the right idea, it’s got to be great…”
He continued, “I think once we collectively agree what idea that great idea is we’ll be off to the races. Ryan’s super-busy, we’ve got a lot of projects lined up, but we wake up thinking about ‘Deadpool,’ and we go to sleep thinking about ‘Deadpool.’”
Adding to the recent excitement from fans of the Merc with a Mouth is the fact that Reynolds recently shared an Instagram post where he was seen at Marvel Studios headquarters. This led fans to speculate that an announcement about “Deadpool 3” is forthcoming, even though it’s likely just a meeting with nothing new to report.
At least, if there was something new to report, you would think that one half of the writing crew would know about it.
As mentioned, there’s no word on when we might see “Deadpool 3” or even if there will be a threequel. But at this point, it appears that no one has forgotten about it and when it’s ready, it’ll be ready. So, there you have it.
