We all know the story of the Untitled third Deadpool movie, aka “Deadpool 3,” rumored to be called “Deadpool vs. Wolverine” (or ‘Logan’), but officially untitled at the moment. To recap briefly: Ryan Reynolds pitched a Deadpool and Wolverine movie during the 20th Century Fox years, but after “Logan,” Hugh Jackman retired from the role and, while tempted, just wasn’t interested in reprising the character.
Cut to late summer 2022, Reynolds, after dozens and dozens of attempts, hears from Jackman out of the blue which says he’s changed his mind, and he’s in, suddenly forcing the “Deadpool 3” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to freak out with joy presumably, but also scramble as they basically have to start over and have a film ready to go for the fall of 2024.
But now there’s a wrinkle. Of course, this is a multiverse film now that Deadpool and all of 20th Century Fox are under the Disney/Marvel umbrella, and we’ve seen Kevin Feige use the multiverse to revive old versions of characters like Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, a variant of whom appeared in “Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness.” So, the multiverse is at play, and many assume the film will be a way to say goodbye to the 20th Century Fox years and character and introduce Deadpool into the proper MCU.
That wrinkle, however? Well, to hear it from Hugh Jackman himself, it sounds like he’ll be playing at least two versions of Wolverine.
“Yes, it will even be a dual role,” he revealed to the French outlet La Parisien in an interview about his latest film, “The Son.” “Ryan and I have been friends for twenty years; we have a lot of fun together. We are filming this summer. That’s why I’m so happy to be in Paris right now and to be able to enjoy French gastronomy. Because very soon, I’m going to have to put myself on a strict diet to remake my Wolverine body: steamed chicken and broccoli!”
So, that’s all we know, but “dual roles” indeed suggest two Logan, at least, unless he’s playing a totally different character. That seems doubtful though (and hey, there were two versions of Wolverine in “Logan”). It remains to be seen what two Logans—if that’s indeed the case—are in the film, but maybe the classic Logan from the “X-Men” and also the Old Man Logan from “Logan”? Who knows.
Meanwhile, speaking of Patrick Stewart, he recently teased that he was told to be on standby for “Deadpool 3,” so who knows, maybe a whole host of X-Men characters from the 20th Century Fox era could turn up. So stay tuned to see what else leaks in that regard. In the interim, “Deadpool 3,” or whatever it eventually becomes titled, is due in theaters on November 8, 2024, and will be directed by “Stranger Things” director and producer Shawn Levy. Apparently, it’ll still be rated R, according to the film’s writers.
