Got a Tip?

The DC Films Universe: All The Movies Coming Soon & In Development

Coming Soon-Ish… Maybe

Suicide Squad 2
Starring: Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Jared Leto, Joel Kinnaman, and perhaps, Dave Bautista?
Directed by: James Gunn (Probably)
The Latest: The news surrounding “Suicide Squad 2” has been very difficult to keep track over since the original film’s 2016 release. After critics ravaged the film, ‘Squad’ went on to earn $325 million domestically and almost $750 million worldwide at the box office, ensuring that WB would fast-track a sequel. However, with the box office bomb of “Justice League,” the studio began taking things a little slower and we are still waiting for positive traction on the sequel. Directors have come and gone, most recently with Gavin O’Connor walking away from the project. However, the Internet came alive last week when it was announced that former “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn had officially been hired to write the script for a “new take” on the franchise. Described as something other than a sequel, “Suicide Squad 2” looks like it could be Gunn’s darker version of ‘Guardians.’ That is, if the script actually comes together and he steps behind the camera, which is expected.
Odds of Release: 75%. In 2016, this would have been a lock, however, over the last two years, behind-the-scenes drama has lowered its odds. That being said, if it’s ever going to be made, James Gunn is probably WB’s greatest chance at getting it done.

The Batman
Starring: Ben Affleck…wait nope, definitely not…Jake Gyllenhaal…nevermind…Jon Hamm? Who the hell knows?!
Directed by: Matt Reeves
The Latest: The game of musical chairs that has happened with the solo Batman film, simply titled “The Batman,” is one for the ages. Originally envisioned as a Ben Affleck-starring film, with the actor writing and directing the film, as well, “The Batman” has been through multiple permutations over the years. Now, Matt Reeves, of ‘Planet of the Apes’ fame, has come aboard to write and direct the film. But then again, he’s been writing this script for what seems like decades at this point. The big question surrounding the film is the status of the star. Is Ben Affleck out? Will Reeves go younger and hire someone new? Is “The Batman” an ‘Elseworlds’-style film that won’t fit in the DCEU continuity? Will Joaquin Phoenix show up? At this point, the only guarantee is that Reeves has put the finishing touches on a draft of the script and filming is hopefully going to happen in the first half of 2019.
Odds of Release: 75%. Odds are in favor of Reeves’ version of “The Batman” hitting screens at some point. However, with the anticipation and high-expectations that WB has for any Batman solo film, there’s also the large chance that Reeves will eventually part ways with the project (he did bail on it once during negotiations) and we could start this whole musical chairs BTS drama yet again.

The Flash
Starring: Ezra Miller, Kiersey Clemons, Billy Crudup
Directed By: John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein
The Latest: During the now-infamous WB/DC 2014 projected slate announcement, “The Flash” was not only a film that was expected to come to theaters eventually, but was actually one of the studio’s sure bets. Ezra Miller was cast for “Justice League” and carried enough star power that it seemed completely unlikely that WB would have any issues bringing his character to the big screen. Then right before “Justice League” was released in 2017, WB announced that “The Flash” film had turned into “Flashpoint,” which would have followed the comic book storyline that saw the titular character irreparably alter the timeline, a la “Back to the Future,” after attempting to stop the murder of his mother. Many saw this as a way for WB/DC to start fresh and focus on a new continuity that left Zack Snyder’s universe behind. However, that was quickly changed and now it appears that “Vacation” “Game Night” helmers, Daley and Goldstein, are aboard to direct a true ‘Flash’ film that just tells the story of the Fastest Man Alive.
Odds of Release: 65%. With every passing month, this film becomes less and less likely. Rumors and speculation have continued for years saying that production would begin soon, but there’s been no substantial proof that it’s going to happen. In fact, hot off the presses, it’s just been announced the film was delayed again until 2021, at the earliest, a full seven years after “The Flash” was initially announced.

Supergirl
Starring: TBD
Directed by: TBD
The Latest: Many DC fans assumed that “Man of Steel 2” was a given, when you take the ending of “Justice League” into consideration. For once, Henry Cavill was going to get the chance to make good on the promise of a proper Superman film. Yet plans have radically changed on the Superman front (see below). Recently, it was announced that Oren Uziel, of “Cloverfield Paradox” and “22 Jump Street” fame, would pen a solo film focusing on Supes’ younger cousin Supergirl. Moreover, with Henry Cavill out of the picture, see below, Warner Bros. has decided to shift focus and concentrate on the character of Supergirl instead, a major, bold move — though maybe not a shock given the success of “Wonder Woman” making the demand for female-led films so apparent. Supergirl has already found fame on the small screen via the CW network, but now she’s poised to be one of the major players in the DC film universe. However, we are still in the very, very early stages of development and a lot could happen. So, let’s not make “Supergirl” a thing, just yet.
Odds of Release: As of right now? 60%. WB/DC really want her, so let’s see what happens.

Batgirl
Starring: TBD, though Kristen Stewart has been thrown around as the “type” of actor they’re searching for.
Directed by: TBD, previously Joss Whedon
The Latest: When it was announced that Joss Whedon would take over for Zack Snyder to helm the reshoots and finish post-production on “Justice League,” the director was also said to be attached to a “Batgirl” that he would write and direct. However, after “Justice League” sank like a brick at the box office and the director experienced some issues in his personal life, Whedon quickly stepped aside from the project and Christina Hodson was brought in to write a new script. Hodson has become a bit of a go-to writer for WB/DC, as she has also written the script for the aforementioned “Birds of Prey.”
Odds of Release: 50%. WB found amazing success with a female-led superhero film in “Wonder Woman,” so it’s no surprise they want to replicate that success with “Birds of Prey,” “Batgirl,” and some others mentioned later. However, before this can happen, there’s a lot of development that needs to go into this film, and at this point, it’s a coin flip.
