Got a Tip?

David Goyer & Warner Bros. Make Deal For ‘Heaven’s Shadows’

Warner Bros. has closed a deal for the film rights to a science fiction trilogy of novels by writer/director David Goyer, with Goyer himself to adapt and produce the first book “Heaven’s Shadow.”

The initial description basically sounds like any other alien-invasion flick, but we’re sure some of the juicier details are being kept under wraps for now. “Heaven’s Shadow” starts the story off “when an object is discovered heading for earth. Initial panic gives way to a competition between governments to be first to intercept what they believe is a breakaway meteor. What the astronauts discover leads to an encounter with alien forces that are a threat to humanity.”

The first book in the trilogy won’t hit until July 2011 with the follow up books, “Heaven’s War” and “Heaven’s Fall” to follow in 2012 and 2013. As Goyer notes, “It’s a perfect project for Warner Bros. and I’ve obviously enjoyed a long and fruitful working relationship with the studio.” He obviously pleased everyone with his work on “The Dark Knight,” provided story details for the upcoming “Batman 3” and is working on the “Superman: Man Of Steel” reboot as well. No word on a director yet, but certainly, Goyer has to be a frontrunner to direct his own material.

We had been hearing rumors that he was in line to direct “Superman” but that other project might snag his attention instead. Could this be that project? Remains to be seen, and obviously that’s just a rumor that floated our way so don’t take it as gospel, but it definitely adds an interesting dimension to the potential Christopher Nolan/Jonathan Nolan/David Goyer working triangle over the next couple of years. 1. Goyer's a solid writer, especially in "genre/scifi" entertainment.

That said, he's little more (and a lot would say "less") than a journeyman TV level hack as a director. Painful to watch when he follows up a smart artist like Del Toro's "Blade 2" with the "smells like TV crap "Blade Trinity".

Let him write and produce stuff but dont' let him anywhere near "Superman" to direct Warners. You only get so many chances to reboot an iconic property before the public tunes out.
