The week of all things "Suicide Squad" continues, and in case it isn’t already clear, the movie is not likely to be your average superhero blockbuster. While there are lots of familiar faces in the cast and recognizable villains, like Jared Leto‘s Juggalo Joker, it’s also populated by lesser known characters like Deadshot and uh, Killer Croc. That said, director David Ayer predicts his movie is going to change the game from the standard formula.
"You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from fucking Planet X before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the fuck cares?" he told Empire. "But you do this story about struggle and isolation and people who have been shit on that suddenly get thrown this lifeline… that’s not so bad… I like to think of this as the Comic Book Movie 2.0."
Well, the proof will be in the tentpole pudding, though perhaps Terry Gilliam will be pleased someone is trying to break free from the expected. As for me, I like Ayer’s confidence, a quality he’s never lacked, but we’ll see how his execution measures out on August 5, 2016. [via ComicBookMovie]
Nothing new. The Misfits on tv did what he\’s talking about quite well. Change the the formula, stick to it, subvert it, whatever. Just deliver a good movie.
This better be Rated R, With language like that….. I hope so.
This is a smart play by DC. Marvel tries to corner the liberal audience, and DC has tried to aim for the Silent Majority. All the cues and dog whistles are there, just like they were there for Superman and Batman. The success of this movie, like other tentpoles, will be whether or not the middle can be enticed.
