It’s unclear if awards recognition is in the cards for the new FX series “Dave.” Since it’s debut earlier this year, “Dave” has been compared to “Atlanta” with its unique spin on the comedy series formula, but we have yet to see if the new show will be able to compete with Donald Glover’s series when it comes to awards. That being said, according to FX, “Dave” has already eclipsed “Atlanta” in one major category—viewers.
Deadline is reporting that “Dave” has been renewed for Season 2 by FX. And in the announcement, it’s revealed that the new series has already become the network’s most-watched comedy series in its history. In its first season, “Dave” has averaged 5.32 million viewers each week over linear, VOD, and streaming, which is more than the 5.2 million viewers that tuned into “Atlanta” during that show’s first season.
“Dave” is co-created and co-written by Dave Burd, aka Lil’ Dicky, a real-life rapper/Internet personality that morphed his own stories of life as a white rapper and viral star into a series about a hapless guy trying to do the same. The series is co-created by Burd alongside Jeff Schaffer.
“We set out to make something special and it’s so gratifying to see the response this show has gotten,” said Burd. “This was my first rodeo, so I’m super excited to take another crack at it now that I’ve got some experience making television. It really feels like the sky is the limit with this show. I look forward to raising the bar even higher next year.”
Added Schaffer, “I am just so glad FX was crazy enough to give Dave Burd a TV show, and smart enough to make it better every step of the way. I’m really looking forward to another season – there are still parts of Dave’s anatomy we haven’t subjected America to.”
Nick Grad, President of Original Programming at FX Entertainment, said, “Co-Creators Dave Burd and Jeff Schaffer, along with their entire creative team have delivered one of television’s best comedies series while becoming FX’s most-watched comedy ever. That is an extraordinary achievement for ‘Dave,’ the cast and crew as they teamed to make a memorable and brilliant season of television.”
It’s unclear when the new season of “Dave” will premiere, though it’s likely that the show won’t be back until at least spring 2021.
