The Grammy Awards— that mostly inessential and ineffectual music awards ceremony and show — were given out tonight and movie fans will want to take note of the three film-related categories.
Perhaps to right the wrong of the Academy Awards snub, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s “The Dark Knight” score won Best Soundtrack Score. Peter Gabriel’s “Down To Earth” song from “Wall-E,” bested both Amy Adams, John C. Reilly, and John Mayer for the Best Song award and the twee mix of Moldy Peaches/Kimya Dawson songs from “Juno” took the Best Compilation Soundtrack prize. Here’s the winners and the nominees left out in the cold (poor Jonny Greenwood).

Peter Gabriel’s “Down To Earth” already has a great shot at Oscar, so don’t think the Grammys are a bellwether of anything other than coincidence. They’re slowly getting more relevant, but mostly, eh. We will say we’re glad that Robert Plant and Alison Krauss won some awards because that album is chock full of good songs as MOR as they might sound from the outside. Radiohead’s In Rainbows won Best Alternative Album. The full list of winners is here.
Goddamned, if that Radiohead performance wasn’t the coolest thing the Grammys have seen in a long time! Made everything else look like cheese. Too bad they didn’t take Album for the Year having to settle for Alternative Album of the Year…ooooook. I won’t complain too loud, as “In Rainbows” isn’t nearly my favorite album of theirs, but it’s loads better than Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.”
I am happy for “Raising Sand” pulling off all their victories though. That album is as smooth as smooth can be, with ‘Killing the Blues’ being my favorite cut. Expect a sequel for sure.

Now I can understand not having Phil (the drummer) play, as I think you’ll see they had enough percussion to cover it, but no Colin on bass?? And the bassline for that song is so sick 🙁
I’m really out of touch with the music world. I was going to include “Please Read The Letter” on a forthcoming Director’s soundtrack mix and had no clue this was the single and an extremely popular album. I just found it on my own a few months ago and was very surprised at how good it was.
Oh yea, which director? Does it being popular now make you not want to include it? I noticed most of your selections for the Directors mixes are more obscure, unpopular (but no less in quality) tracks.
Well not necessarily, but if it’s super well known, like this track seems to be, I usually decide against it. I wasn’t sure which director, but was considering it for a Cameron Crowe pt II. Not sure if that’ll even happen now.
nice movie, good animation technology used.
