The writing was on the wall. With David Slade leaving the project earlier this summer, and Joe Carnahan revealing yesterday that his pitch for a "'Serpico' styled" take on "Daredevil" "went up in smoke," it wasn't exactly clear how Fox was going to hang on to the rights to the character with an October 10th deadline looming. And it looks like they won't.
Variety reports that given the latest developments, the rights will head back to Marvel sometime this fall, where we suppose they will be free to reboot it as they see fit. Previously, there was some talk of Fox and Marvel/Disney coming together on a co-financing deal, or the possibility of Fox giving Marvel the rights to some characters (Silver Surfer and Galactus were tossed around) in exchange for extension. But clearly, that won't be happening (the latter scenario made little sense considering Fox announced they're rebooting "Fantastic Four" with Josh Trank, of which those characters are pretty essential). So, where to next?
That remains to be seen. Marvel pretty much has their slate through 2015 lined up with "Iron Man 3," "Thor: The Dark World," "Captain America: The Winter Solider," "Guardians Of The Galaxy," and "The Avengers 2" the priority projects they are working on, with "Ant-Man" lurking in the background. A "'Serpico' styled" take on Daredevil certainly wouldn't fit in their established movie universe, so we would imagine development on the movie would go right back to square one and start all over. In short, you're probably not going to be seeing Matt Murdock on the big screen anytime soon.
Are you glad that Daredevil is back at Marvel? What do you want them to do with the superhero? Weigh in below.
I'm glad Marvel finally gets the rights back for Daredevil. The fox version was crap. Marvel has Blade and The Punisher back in house thankfully. That leaves X-Men, Fantastic Four with fox. Spider-Man and Ghost Rider with Sony. I'm not holding my breath for X-Men, F.F or Spidey going home sense there top cash cows for the studios. But Ghost Rider is likely the next one to go home considering how lame the last two movies were. If Marvel can't do it right no one can.
Marvel has had Punisher back since 2010. Bit disappointing they're just sitting on the rights while they make crap like guardians of the galaxy, which will just be a money pit.
Marvel got the rights back to Blade and the Punisher last summer.
this is great news! im so happy the rights reverted back to marvel studios. what marvel studios needs to do is make another universe set within the marvel cinematic universe for the gritty and darker tone heroes. daredevil, punisher, doctor strange, luke cage, iron fist, ghost rider and blade would be a great starting point
Well i was right, Fox fucked it up. Should have just gone with Carnahan's vision.
My dream scenario would be for them to wait for the Punisher rights to come back to Marvel and make a film where you get gritty take on Frank Miller's run in Dare Devil were the Punisher was used as a villain or at least someone at odds with Dare Devil. I would love to see Ryan Gosling & Nicolas Winding Refn team up again for this one.
Pretty sure a daredevil tv show is a great direction for marvel to take the character.
Now if Ben Affleck had to direct (but not star) any comic book film THIS should be it. Space & time would warp as a fact
So what does this leave? Is it just Fantastic Four and X-Men with Fox and Spider-Man with Sony?
