Got a Tip?

Danny Boyle Says 40/60 Chance ’28 Months Later’ Happens, Worries Zombies Are Overexposed

nullWhile there have been constant questions and perhaps some hope, the prospect of a third entry in the zombie franchise started with “28 Days Later…” has been increasingly dim. Last fall, writer Alex Garland stated “if there were plans for another movie, I would absolutely know about it.” Meanwhile, director Danny Boyle has consistently remained cagey about coming back for the tentatively titled “28 Months Later…” (the second movie, “28 Weeks Later…” was helmed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo) and he continues to remain cautious not just about the movie, but about the genre as a whole.

Speaking with Wired, Boyle once again reasserts that he’s actually not a fan of zombie movies at all, and even popular fare leaves him cold. “I don’t like zombie movies. I never did. We took a genre and fucked with it. Zombie aficionados, they’re quite precious with all their rules. Like with running: ‘They don’t do that!’ Of course there are so many manifestations of zombies now, the rule book has gone out the window,” he said. “I saw one episode of ‘The Walking Dead,’ and it was very gripping. But the zombies were stumbling around again, which I hate.”

And with the hit show on AMC, and countless movies still coming (“Warm Bodies” dropped back in February, while “World War Z” is on the way), Boyle wonders if there are just too many projects about the undead stumbling around. And as such, the odds on “28 Months Later…” aren’t so hot.

“Given what we’ve just been talking about, it’s very difficult to know whether zombies are overexposed now as a concept. So it’s 40/60 whether it happens or not. But we did have an idea of where to set it and what it might be about,” Boyle said. But just don’t expect him to share just what those ideas are “because they’ll end up in ‘The Walking Dead’ ” he joked.

So, basically? Don’t get your hopes up, but there is a slim margin of a chance “28 Months Later…” will happen. But it seems Boyle is waiting to see how the zombie landscape shakes out and if he has something truly new to say, before pressing on.

  1. 1. Your 28 Later films are amazing, some of the scariest films and ideas I have ever seen in my life. 2. Infected doesn\’t even count in the zombie genre, so running is fine, and it\’s a hell of a lot scarier. If 28 Months Later isn\’t made, many people will be missing the dream of seeing a continuation of the terrifying masterpiece that is 28 Later. 3. The zombie genre is just getting started, there are so many great ideas, books and films that haven\’t even been introduced to the genre yet. George Romero has taken the same stance, but in my opinion the only thing overrated about the zombie genre and the reason why it seems like it is becoming out or style, is because the best film makers of the genre have quit making zombie films. I honestly love zombies, they are my life… I don\’t ever want to see them go out of style, every movie that comes out whether not original or not, just makes me happy to at least see them again. Did you know that World War Z was just about the only zombie flick released in about a year or two? That makes me sad. I want to see them constantly, I want to see some really scary and horrifying stuff – and 28 Later delivers that. Please, please for the love of your fans that you have made and out of respect for your amazing ideas, at least make one more film – or a great idea may be forever lost.

  2. Boyle says zombies might be over done but as I've been reading lots of comments on different sites, not many view the 28 series as a zombie movie. It's different and that makes it great. Many fans are eager to see 28 months later. The way 28 weeks later was left, makes us want more. We want to see what happens to these characters that made it. Does this kid Andy just cause more chaos by infection or is the government able to use the kids to produce a cure?!

  3. Months later: Russia, north pole, mass groups of people fleeing to usa, usa is infected.

Russian soldiers a must. Go on Days Later as your prequel, it'll save you another movie to match both: Years later.

  4. In 28, they are not really zombies. They're infected with a sickness… Danny Boyle reinvented the genre, invented a genre. If it's a virus, they can maybe create vaccines, etc. Zombies can not be cured. If anyone could have something to tell, combining with social political statements, it's him.
I do hope we get to see a final installment, to just know what happens after 28 weeks. That's an ending right there too good not to pick up on.

  5. The only reason 28 Days later was so great is that it put a different spin on a crappy old concept, but most of the other movies and tv shows released recently have just been lazy and utterly forgettable. We've seen the original zombie classics, the sequels, the satires, the unnecessary remakes, the unnecessary prequels, the rip offs, the spoofs, the comedies, the post-modern takes, etc., we got it. It's a boring, formulaic genre at this point.

  6. I was afraid all of these dumbass zombie shows/movies would be overkill and now the smart storytellers (Boyle) are going to steer clear of the whole genre. Walking Dead is so lame. The 28 movies are worth 100 seasons of that shitshow.

  7. Of all the modern day zombie flicks I think '28 days' really nailed it. The film played out in a realistic manner with very real possibility of how a zombie apocalypse might occur. In my opinion Boyle did the best job at portraying such a scenario not the mention the raw indie feel the film had along with the soundtrack. Please Alex Garland and Danny Boyle, if you're reading this, please make a '28 months' if for not other reason do it to recoup Fresnadillo's version.

  8. I'm in Love w/ The Walking Dead. The People who study 'Scocieties' say the Zombie films/TV/Games all come from us the Public not being able to deal w/ what is going on in our world!?! so my question is….What comes AFTER the Zombies? What could be WORSE than a Zombie attack?
