Could Danny Boyle be returning to old project “Ponte Tower” for his next directorial vehicle?
In an article profiling Optimum Releasing, the U.K. based production and distribution company’s production slate is reported to include “Boyle’s upcoming ‘Ponte Tower,’ a thriller based in Johannesburg and centred on the tallest residential skyscraper in Africa.”
Loosely based on a book by German novelist Norman Ohler, “Ponte Tower” centers on a girl from Soweto who moves to the titular tower at the end of Apartheid and comes under the control of a charming drug lord. Michael Thomas (“Scandal,” “Backbeat”) was writing the script as of early 2007 when Boyle was first linked to the project – on the brink of the release of his sci-fi-thriller “Sunshine” and before “Slumdog Millionaire” came into the fray.
Though the director did note earlier this year that the project was “never certain at all” and that he “[didn’t think] it was going to happen now,” perhaps his newly-signed three-picture deal with Fox Searchlight has revived his initial interest? And it seems about time for Boyle to knuckle down with something, right?
Since “Slumdog Millionaire,” Boyle has been rumored and linked to a plethora of projects including Simon Beaufoy’s “Maximum City,” a “Lady Vengeance” remake, the 23rd James Bond , a “My Fair Lady” remake, a sequel to his “Trainspotting” and a few India-based projects though none have since come to fruition.
