‘Da Understudy’: Jonathan Majors To Star In Upcoming Spike Lee Film

Jonathan Majors is on top of the world right now. Not only did he end 2022 with the acclaimed war film, “Devotion,” but his 2023 has gone better than expected. Not only did his performance as Kang the Conquerer wow audiences in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” but his newest film, “Creed III” exceeded all expectations and earned more than $100 million worldwide in its opening weekend. What could be better than that? Well, how about adding a Spike Lee movie to the schedule?

According to Deadline, Jonathan Majors is set to produce and star in the upcoming film, “Da Understudy,” for Westbrook Studios and Amazon Studios. Not only that, the film is expected to land Spike Lee as the director. This would mark a reunion for the filmmaking duo after they worked together on Lee’s film, “Da 5 Bloods.” The new movie is said to follow the story of a Broadway understudy who finds a role he’s willing to kill for. Sounds like yet another film that can showcase Majors’ incredible range.

As mentioned, Majors has been killing it in 2023 with ‘Quantumania’ and “Creed III.” In addition to those two films, the actor also has “Magazine Dreams” lined up for a 2023 release after the film had an incredible debut at this year’s Sundance. This is really incredible when you realize that Majors only really broke out back in 2019 with “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” It’s been a whirlwind several years for the actor.

Lee’s most recent narrative film work is in the aforementioned “Da 5 Bloods.” He’s been working on a number of projects in development, including the anticipated film, “Prince of Cats.” Lee also recently directed the acclaimed “David Byrne’s American Utopia” as well as a docuseries, “NYC Epicenters 9/11-2021½.”

No release date is confirmed for “Da Understudy,” but we’ll definitely keep our eyes out for this one.
