Surprising No One, CW Orders Pilot For Ruby Rose-Starring ‘Batwoman’ Series

Not the most shocking way to ring in the new year, but according to Variety, CW has gone ahead and ordered a pilot episode for a potential “Batwoman” series.

It was long assumed that the network that houses such series as “Black Lightning,” “Supergirl,” “Arrow,” “The Flash,” and “Legends of Tomorrow” would make “Batwoman” the latest DC superhero series to join the lineup. After a seemingly successful debut during the major crossover event, “Elseworlds,” in December, the character of Batwoman, played by “Orange is the New Black” alum Ruby Rose, is now poised to be the final straw before CW just turns itself into the DC Superhero Network (oh wait, they already have one of those. But still.).

CW has enlisted the help of director David Nutter to bring Ruby Rose’s Batwoman to her own series. For those not familiar with Nutter, he’s a bit of a TV pilot savant. The director has helmed no less than 16 pilots, with all but one getting picked up to series. Not bad stats. Add to that, he’s the man responsible for directing the pilots for “Arrow” and “The Flash,” which kicked off this whole shared universe, so he knows his way around a superhero or two.

For those unaware of Batwoman, the character has been around since the ‘50s, but has really only recently been a major player in the DC universe. Kate Kane is the name of the out-lesbian crime fighter called Batwoman. After tragic circumstances leave her family dead, including her twin sister, Kane begins training and eventually becomes the crimefighter fans know and love. Her costume has grown iconic with a bright red wig flowing out of her cowl.

There’s no word on a release date, but the safe bet is that CW would love to have “Batwoman” debut sometime this coming fall.

Here’s the synopsis for the series:

Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
