Noir Classic ‘Double Indemnity’ Gets A 4K UHD Release From Criterion In May

Over the past several months, we’ve seen the Criterion Collection add flashy new titles that are modern classics that most everyone is familiar with. But in the month of May, Criterion is going back to what it does best—taking potentially overlooked, underseen classics and giving them a brand new coat of paint and making them available for film fans who might have missed them previously.

Leading the way in May is a film that many people are probably already familiar with, Billy Wilder’sDouble Indemnity.” However, what makes this release is special is that “Double Indemnity” is getting a 4K UHD release, which means the film will be seen in its best possible way. And what better way to celebrate a 4K UHD release than by having a new 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack, as well as the UHD disc including the transfer in Dolby Vision HDR.

Next, we have Wayne Wang’sChan Is Missing,” which believe it or not is about a missing man in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The Criterion release features a high-definition transfer of the film, approved by Wang, as well as new conversations between Wang and critic Hua Hsu and another with filmmaker Ang Lee. Also, you’ll find a brand new subtitle translation, which is always a welcome addition to these sorts of releases.

Joining “Double Indemnity” and “Chan is Missing” in May are Juzo Itami’s look at the Japanese way of death in “The Funeral,” Joseph Losey’sMr. Klein,” and Mira Nair’s modern cross-cultural romance, “Mississippi Masala,” which sports a long-awaited restoration.

You can find all of these releases available for pre-order now at the Criterion site.
