Got a Tip?

‘The Crimes Of Grindelwald’ Will Keep Dumbledore’s Sexuality Hidden

It seems that “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald” just keeps walking into controversy. First there was director David Yates‘ and creator/screenwriter J.K. Rowling‘s rather weak defence over the casting of Johnny Depp in the series as Grindelwald. Now comes word that the sexuality of young Dumbledore, played by Jude Law in the forthcoming film, will pretty much be kept under wraps.

EW spoke with Yates, that the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald will keep their mutual attraction on low heat. It’s likely a disappoint for fans and Rowling follows, particular coming a decade after the author said at Carnegie Hall, “I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was.”

“Not explicitly,” Yates said about the whether or not the Dumbledore/Grindelwald union will get screentime. “But I think all the fans are aware of that. He had a very intense relationship with Grindelwald when they were young men. They fell in love with each other’s ideas, and ideology and each other.”

However, you can continue clinging to hope. With three more planned sequels (sheesh), Rowling suggests that romance could bloom in future pictures — though she won’t confirm or deny anything just yet.

“I can’t tell you everything I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story so there’s lots to unpack in that relationship,” Rowling said two years ago. “You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man — he wasn’t always the sage…We’ll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned … watch this space.”

Well, fans will still watching and asking before and after ‘The Crimes Of Grindelwald’ arrives on November 16th.

You know that time in our lives when we’re young, naive and 45.

  2. Wow what courage, another character whose gay but only ever in the twitter/fanfiction of the writer or actor or whatever, never in the actual work, so they can come across as progressive without ever actually doing anything, like actually depicting a gay relationship or firing a woman beater.
