Got a Tip?

‘Creed’ Sequel May Reunite Rocky Balboa And Apollo Creed

Given the legacy-quel’s box office success, it was only a matter of time until a followup to “Creed” was announced, and it pretty much has. “There’s no doubt that we’re making a ‘Creed 2,’” MGM CEO Gary Barber told Variety. But what will it be about? If you thought it’s beyond doubt that a sequel would follow the continuing adventures of Michael B. Jordan‘s character Adonis Johnson, you would be mistaken.

According to the trade, director Ryan Coogler and franchise star Sylvester Stallone are batting around several ideas, one of which would be a prequel of sorts reuniting Rocky Balboa and Carl Weathers‘ Apollo Creed (who died in “Rocky IV“).

“Ryan has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together,” Stallone said. “Think of ‘The Godfather 2.’ That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.” Of course, that movie arrived two years after “The Godfather,” not more than three decades later, as Coogler’s project would. But Stallone says Weathers is still in fighting shape and seems keen on the concept.

“So it’s going to be a CGI-version of Sly?” Jordan quipped, which is pretty much my reaction.

But if that idea doesn’t work, Stallone is open to a more traditional followup focusing on Adonis. “You’ll have him face a different opponent, which I would say is a more ferocious, big Russian,” Stallone said. “You can start to meld [Rocky’s] experiences and then you start to bring different cultures into it. And you can see what’s happening with the Russians today in America.”

Okay, but let’s just hope he’s not talking about Ivan Drago’s son or something….. At any rate, it’s early days, and it’s not clear if Coogler will be back to direct, given that his schedule is busy with “Black Panther,” coupled with the desire to get a “Creed” followup out sooner rather than later.

  1. This doesn\’t make any sense to go back to the past. Weathers and Sly are too old to replay past events.

However, Michael B. Jordan\’s over-the-top acting can be a reflection of Coogler\’s direction. I\’ve watched Jordan in two lead roles, both which feature him trying too hard to be tough.

I did like Jordan better in Fruitvale Station than in Creed. Maybe a sequel will humbel this character because he will be hungry to validate his new role – the quest to become the best.

Michael B. Jordan has the potential. He may need to tone down his acting and just be natural. Carl Weather had that natural, effortless aura surrounding him. He made some great movies. His Rock-Rocky IV roles showed his natural abilities as an actor. I really liked this character.

  2. The story is already there from pt 1. He goes after Andre Ward\’s character who beat him down in the gym where Apollo\’s manager\’s son (Wood Harris) is training him.

  3. Create son gets in a fight with the Russians son in a boxing ring and goes into a coma but doesn\’t die and while he is in this, his dad Creed teaches him how to box and when he comes back to

  4. I don\’t think the Apollo-Rocky meetup can happen unless the context is Heaven after Rocky dies of cancer. Both are too old for a prequel although I think they both look great for their age.

It really underscores how boring Michael B Jordan is as an actor if the first choice is a prequel that excludes him. Yeah, I\’d rather watch Weathers than Jordan anyday but I don\’t see how it could happen. I wouldn\’t go see a movie just cause Jordan is the lead though. Sly would definitely have to be prominent.
