2017 is turning out to be the year when television has become an unexpected reflection of the political powers in the White House. “The Handmaid’s Tale” has gained an extra layer of chilling relevance as continual healthcare reforms alarmingly remove or make it difficult for women (and many others) to access necessary medical coverage. Now, with Jeff Sessions talking about reinstating the failed policies of the The War on Drugs, “Snowfall” looks timely as ever.

From “Boyz N The Hood” director John Singleton, the series is set in Los Angeles in the 1980s, just as the crack epidemic is about to explode. Here’s the official synopsis:
The story follows numerous characters on a violent collision course, including: Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), young street entrepreneur on a quest for power; Gustavo Zapata (Sergio Peris-Mencheta), a Mexican wrestler caught up in a power struggle within a crime family; Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), a CIA operative running from a dark past who begins an off-book operation to fund the Nicaraguan Contras; and Lucia Villanueva (Emily Rios), the self-possessed daughter of a Mexican crime lord.
The ten-episode first season of “Snowfall” debuts on July 5th.
