Earlier this year it was announced that the “Scream” franchise would get the “legacyquel” treatment, with “Ready or Not” filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence resurrecting the franchise with a new film. We’d already heard that David Arquette was returning to reprise the role of Dewey Riley. And now the news arrives that Courteney Cox will also be back as news reporter Gale Weathers.

Cox has played the role in all four of Wes Craven‘s “Scream” movies, so this is a good sign that the film will not be a complete reboot, but a continuation of the originals.
“We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney,” Radio Silence said in a statement. “We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the ‘Scream’ saga!”
The film will be directed by Radio Silence from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (“Zodiac“) and Guy Busick (“Ready or Not,” “Castle Rock“). Meanwhile, franchise creator Kevin Williamson will executive produce with the third member of the Radio Silence trio, Chad Villella. Now, if only Neve Campbell would get confirmed, we would be ready to go.
The original “Scream” movies revolutionized horror in the ’90s, with the first film heralding a wave of slasher movies starring teenagers. With all four satirizing different tropes and trends in Hollywood, it would be easy to assume this movie would make fun of the revival trend.

The only problem is that the last film, which came out in 2011, already satirized the trend of sequels coming decades after the originals. That being said, there have been enough trends the last few years that warrant a new “Scream” satirizing them. Can you imagine this movie making fun of the whole “elevated horror” debate?
