This weekend, director Richard Donner was accosted by TMZ papp journos and when asked about making any more comic book movies, the filmmaker said “Goonies 2” would be his choice and that a sequel—which was seemingly squashed a few years ago—is back on. The “interview” on the street was a weird one and it led some to believe that it wasn’t Donner saying it’s going to happen, only that maybe the sequel should happen.
In case you’re wondering about the veracity of the statement or need some kind of double confirmation (because the director’s own words aren’t enough?), actor Corey Feldman took to Twitter this weekend. And in a long series of tweets, confirmed that Donner and original producer Steven Spielberg were going forward trying to get a new “Goonies” sequel script in place. While Feldman did express some skepticism about a sequel script being good enough to compel the entire original cast to return, he did say that director Chris Columbus would be part of it as well (Columbus wrote the original screenplay, so perhaps this means, he’s writing the sequel).
Here’s Feldman’s “statement” culled from Twitter.
GOONIES 2:FACT OR FICTION? I hav[e] been hounded incessantly since this “rumor” hit the press 24 hrs ago! Literally thousands of tweets [and] FB messages. Unfortunately I can’t be the one to GIVE you an official answer, however I will gladly share what I do know. I ran [into] my good friend Dick Donner a few months ago. He told me the exact same thing. I normally wouldn’t share that convoersation, but since he made it public, I can verify: the statement as he said “Steven [Spielberg and] I R doin it together”, and mentioned something about Chris Columbus helping out. He also said he wanted us all in it. However, I have yet to see a script, so I remain skeptical. As uoi know the idea has been recycled four yrs, but it can’t be done w/o a perfect script! We all must be certain that it doesn’t miss the magic of the original. That said Dick is one of the few men in this industry yhat I LOVE [and TRUST as he is a great, honest, and Noble man, who has always been there 4 me in my life, and would not tell a lie! So if he says it’s close, then I believe they are workin hard to make it the best script possible and if and when they feel confident to share with us, you will know!
In semi-related news, it appears there’s a fast track on a mooted “Gremlins” reboot, but this isn’t entirely new as news of a “Gremlins” redo has been in the works for some time now (thanks to writer/producer Seth Grahame-Smith).
