There are few filmmakers who arrived with quite the same frenzy as Xavier Dolan did when he unveiled his directorial debut, “I Killed My Mother” in 2009. Landing at Cannes for a splashy premiere, where it took the Prix Regards C.I.C.A.E. Award and put the director on the map, it established the bold style that Dolan would develop across two more features, “Heartbeats” and “Laurence Anyways.” With Dolan slated to unveil his latest effort, the thriller “Tom At The Farm“—which promises to be taking a different direction than his previous works—now is as good a time as any to revisit where it all begun.
The movie has been a long time coming to the United States, with rights issues tangling up the release of the picture for a couple of years. But now you can see the raw and beautiful coming-of-age tale that centers on Huber Minel (Dolan), a 16-year-old Quebecois living in suburban Montreal with his mother, Chantale (Anne Dorval). Dealing with coming out of the closet and a relationship with a boyfriend, he finds himself at odds with his mother and lashes out at her while pouring his feelings into painting, writing and other arts. And when he’s sent away to boarding school, the emotional stakes are raised even higher until a final confrontation. It’s strong stuff with great performances, particularly from Dorval.
