According to a report a few weeks ago, First Look Pictures were allegedly releasing the Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” on November 20.
Well, we just got a screening invite and turns out this info, which first came from GetTheBigPicture, so hat tip to them, is correct.
First look are the decidedly-B-movie studio behind Lindsay Lohan’s recent “Labor Pains” and the Cuba Gooding Jr. film, “The Way of War,” which are films generally a slight cut above straight-to-DVD, but not always.
The wacky film, which we saw at TIFF, probably needs to be experienced firsthand, but we can’t say it was super successful on a whole. There are some interesting/amusing moments in it though (the breakdancing spirit is probably the best), which makes it not a total wash. We also were onhand for the Q&A with Herzog after the film if you want to see video of the director saying typically outlandish stuff.
Aside from lead Nicolas Cage as a drug-crazed detective quickly going off his rock, the uneven, but wild movie also stars Val Kilmer as a homicide detective, Eva Mendes as Cage’s call-girl girlfriend, Xzibit as a drug lord, and Fairuza Balk as a state trooper, ex-girlfriend of Cage’s character.
