8. The Russo Brothers’ “Assassination Nation”
Among the most celebrated, acclaimed, and well-discussed movies at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was writer/director Sam Levinson’s sophomore feature “Assassination Nation.” While our own critic Jordan Ruimy wasn’t completely taken away by the social media satire coming-of-age joint in his mixed review, its notoriety was earned elsewhere for its boldness, timeliness, relevance, hyper-intensity and stylish, hyperactive madness. Whether or not you liked it, you had something to say about it. Sure enough, NEON saw its rich potential and gobbled it up for $10 million alongside AGBO, Joe and Anthony Russo’s newfound production company, resulting in the most expensive acquisition at this year’s Sundance festivities. Audiences everywhere will get a chance to see what the commotion is about when it hits theaters on September 21st. Until then, Comic-Con is the place to be to see the controversial flick.
To drum up more excitement for the anticipated indie, Joe and Anthony Russo will be in attendance at this year’s Comic-Con, not to discuss their heavily-seen Marvel film “Avengers: Infinity War,” nor its untitled sequel set for release next year but rather to promote and discuss the controversial new movie with a panel that featuring its cast members, including Bill Skarsgård, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, and Abra, as well as Levinson. See what all the chatter is about during the Hall H panel on Thursday, July 19th.
9. “Breaking Bad“ 10th Anniversary Panel
It might be hard to believe, but Vince Gilligan’s bleak, exhilarating, invigorating and utterly gripping masterpiece of a drama series, “Breaking Bad,” has officially entered the double digits in 2018. The top-notch AMC original series made its television debut back in January 20th, 2008, and the phenomenal series didn’t slow down its momentum one single notch until it aired its final hour of A-grade TV on September 29th, 2013. Now that the series has said its peace, and the actors involved have had time to reflect on the groundbreaking television they produced, they’re ready to talk about it.
Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Bob Odenkirk, Giancarlo Esposito, Betsy Brandt, Jonathan Banks and RJ Mitte will join Gilligan for a Q&A session with attendees on Thursday, July 19th, to discuss the impact of their addictive, award-winning drama series, and how the actors and show’s creators reflect on the influential series they cooked up. Shortly before that, “Better Call Saul” also makes its Comic-Con debut to discuss the highly-anticipated fourth season of the acclaimed prequel series before its August 6th premiere date. Odenkirk, Banks, Esposito and Gilligan will be on stage alongside Rhea Seehorn, Michael Mando, Patrick Fabian and series co-creator Peter Gould to be the prequel to the “Breaking Bad” only a few hours later. Fans should rejoice and maybe we’ll get the full ‘Saul’ season 4 trailer too.
10. Legion, Dr. Who & The Highlights Of The TV line-Up
While it can sometimes be overshadowed by the film side of the party, TV definitely knows how to make an appearance at San Diego’s Comic-Con. In addition to the “Breaking Bad” anniversary panel and the “Star Wars” presentations, the TV coverage that is likely to draw the most amount of attention at this year’s event is “Doctor Who.” Notably, since Jodie Whittaker is now taking on intergalactic doctoral duties, we should expect our first true impression of how Whittaker shapes up in the iconic role.
Meanwhile, Comic-Con is also going to house the official premiere of “Castle Rock,” Hulu’s forthcoming Stephen King-inspired (and indebted) horror series. Reviews are already coming in, and nearly all of them glow. Now, fans will be able to get their first official peek at what the acclaimed show entails before it makes its debut on the streaming site on July 25th.

We’re also looking forward to the “Legion” panel on the last Sunday of the festival, which should see the cast and creators on hand to (hopefully) explain what the hell happened in season 2 and provide a few hints at what is set to come during the show’s third season, which is confirmed. Speaking of things that often make little sense, there’s also a “Twin Peaks” panel, promising to promote the revival of a cult classic, the day before. And for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” fans, there is a final curtain call on hand that’ll talk about the final season. It’s also expected to feature live music.
That’s it, but plenty to see. The lead-up to Comic-Con this week will surely be noisy with all kinds of promotion and when things kick off on Thursday, July 19, through Sunday, July 22, we’ll surely be inundated with all kinds of trailers, posters and promotional news about all things geekdom. Stay tuned.
