What’s this? Now we’re blogging about this thing? Yeah, well a) our Boycott “Cloverfield” campaign came way too late, b) there’s nothing we can do to stop this juggernaut and c) our causa causans is reporting music in films, no?
So yeah, “Cloverfield” the monster movie. There’s not really a soundtrack? Yes and no. The film starts out with Rob’s “goodbye party” (he’s leaving for Japan – the place where monsters come from – if you haven’t already heard a trillion times) and there’s many a quick snippet of a song being dj’d at his potty including songs by Jason Schwartzman’s Coconut Records project, Spoon (as we mentioned yesterday), Kings of Leon, Gorillaz, Ratatat, Of Montreal, Bright Eyes and more. We got a CD, but as far as we know there won’t be an official soundtrack disc and this was just a promotional item as part of the myspacey campaign.
The list looks like this and is basically all the “songs” in the movie. There’s a little bit of score here and there, but it’s mostly the sounds of explosions, screaming, monster whale-grunting and our eyes rolling far back into our head.
Rob’s Party Mix – The Unofficial Cloverfield Soundtrack
Coconut Records – West Coast
Kings of Leon – “Taper Jean Girl”
Sean Kingston – “Beautiful Girls”
The Blood Arm – “Do I Have Your Attention”
Scissors For Lefty – “Got Your Moments”
Parliament – “Give Up the Funk”
Gorillaz – “19-2000”
Spoon – “The Underdog”
Moby – “Disco Lies”
Kings of Leon – “Pistol of Fire”
Architecture in Helsinki – “Do The Whirlwind”
The Black Keys – “Grown So Ugly”
Bright Eyes – “Four Winds”
Joan As Policewoman – “The Ride”
Ratatat – “Seventeen Years”
Of Montreal – “Wraith Pinned To The Mist and Other Games”
Mucc – “Fuzz”
MTV’s Kurt Loder makes us laugh when he describes the opening party scenes in the movie. “It’s unfortunate that this sequence goes on for 20 minutes; it’s too long, and it gives us too much time to become annoyed by the partygoers’ abrasive bonhomie, and to wish that a colossal prehistoric lizard of some sort would stomp onto the scene and squash most of them like sand fleas.” Ha ha.
Indie-rock is becoming so ubiquitous in films it’s getting that places like Pitchfork, Stereogum, et al., will no longer need to write, “OMG, THEY’RE USING OUR MUSIC IN THIS FILM!” anymore cause apparently indie if officially mainstream and soundtrack supervisors are all early 30-somethings with an E-Music account.
“Cloverfield” is expected to trounce the competition at the box-office this weekend with projections as high as $40 million. Le sigh… We saw it last night. It wasn’t as bad as we thought. Basically it’s like an emo-myspace video about faux-hipsters (think bridge-n-tunnel weekend crowd) meets “The Blair Witch” nausea-cam meets Godzilla and every other movie that tried to destroy New York City. It’s a thrill ride and a decent, entertaining one; nothing more, nothing less. Also, it’s laughable and ridiculous, but if you like this sort of thing, it will probably do the trick for you. You barely see the monster. We assume that’s the director that no one cares about (Matt Reeves, not JJ Abrams, he’s only the producer/mastermind) attempt at being “Jaws”-like (also, all the budget goes into explosions, so you can’t have that much monster).
We will say garbage like “I Am Legend” makes “Cloverfield” looks like Fellini, so that’s something positive, but that’s as much of a review as you’re going to get from us. But a hearty fuck-you still goes out to every bleating sheep-blogger out there.
Meanwhile, the New York Times calls it, “nominally a monster movie, but mostly it’s a feature-length gimmick.”

Ugh. Thanks for spoiling the monster! I knew my tickets for tomorrow night wouldn’t be soon enough to avoid any spoilers!
By the way, I love your blog, but what’s with all the juvenile “Cloverfield” bashing?
Because watching lemmings rush off the tops of cliffs is painful.
I saw the movie earlier today. I went in expecting some sort of cheesy monster movie, but ended up loving it. The handheld camera work can be a little hard to stomach at times, but it also gives you a sense of being right in the thick of the action.
By the way, I came across your site while looking for a download of the orchestral piece that plays during the closing credits.
Ok, this movie deserves more of a “I guess I was a little wrong.” You really have to give these guys credit. Everything they did (besides the 20 minutes of party that did get a little annoying) was absolutely essential. Could you picture this movie without the Blair Witch camera style? It would be almost as bad as Godzilla in 1999. Secondly, the monster deserves applause. It truly is difficult to create a new monster, and I believe the crew did an excellent job finding something that can still scare and be complex. Lastly, you’re just pissed because you think viral marketing is crap. Well buddy, in the view of a producer, you’ll see how well it payed off come Monday and the box office charts are released. Cloverfield will be an absolute monster (no pun intended) Besides, viral marketing works. (Year One, Lost, Dark Knight) No way would have this many people come and see the movie if the monster was outright shown in the previews or the absolute entire plot was shown with the atrocious movie trailer guy saying, “Something has come for us.” It just be down right cheesy. So what I want is a full out apology to the guys at Cloverfield, because they seriously worked their asses off to make one of the best monster movies of the decade.
Thanks for the post! I was wondering if it would be possible for you t upload the rest of the soundtrack for us? Or at least the final track that is played during the credits? Thanks for the 3 youve uploaded already 🙂
The songs in the credits are score material that aren’t on the cd and haven’t been made commercially or otherwise….yet. Wait for it.
Ahaha, I know. I went back to the track listing and looked at it and felt like an idiot, ahaa. Thanks anyways 🙂
There were songs in the movie that aren’t on this list. But I don’t know what they’re called. 🙁
The other songs are just score material.
okay please stop comparing this movie to blair witch, that was not the first movie to do the camera work like this…… check out a little film named cannibal holocaust. its about students went to the jungle to make a film documentary, but guess what happens they never comeback. they find their camera etc….. and as for Cloverfield it was awesome. and if you like monster films you should check out the korean film the host.
I don’t know why everyone’s bashing this film so much.
I thought it was great. It wasn’t trying to be anything more than it was. I just wish we had seen less of the monster. It’s creepier that way.
I’m pretty sure there were other songs at the party and not just original score stuff. Like that Sean Kingston song Beautiful Girl, not indie, but still on the mix i think.
i’m pretty certain “beautiful girls” by sean kingston was in the movie.
Oops. I believe that was an error on my part. Pretty sure that Sean Kingston song is on the Cloverfield mix, but i guess i just forgot to write it down when i was transcribing it. I will double check tomorrow and revise.
hey i was trying to find a song from the movie but i cant find it, someone help me, its the uhuh yeahhah song that plays at robs party, and its also from disturbia but i cant find it, any body now what its called, il be thankful 4eva. post a comment with the name and ill check it later. thank you
Hunta, the song you’re looking for is called “Taper Jean Girl”, by Kings of Leon.
Leave it alone. Cloverfield was good.
I’m one of the people that has been keeping up with this movie since the start. I didn’t follow the ARG TOO closely, but I kept my eye out for new details.
I loved it.
Congratulations?
:::::Spoilers Ahead::::: Who the hell could take this movie?? It plays out as if written by a 13 year old.
1)The monster seems to be following them where ever they go 2)The statue’s head just happens to land right in front of their apartment building
3)The bridge just happens to break when they are on it and whatever broke the bridge just happens to hit exactly where robs brother is 4)Beth happens to be alive when they find her
5) Their plane just happens to be jumped at and bitten by the monster while in flight
6)When the plane crashes they all live and are not injured but the two pilots die
7)When the bridge collapses on Beth and Rob at the end … the bridge breaking is enough to crush and kill two human bodies but not enough to crash a plastic video cam and tape?
There are a few more too that I can’t think of off the top of my head.
The movie just became so predicable. Plus, motion sickness made this a bitch to watch.
Damn, you guys are so butthurt when it comes to Cloverfield. The movie was very good.
And you BARELY hear these songs in the movie. Seconds of each one in the first 20 minutes of the movie.
Cloverfield fans are a funny lot. And if you’d actually read… “many a quick snippet of a song.”
I have heard of Kings Of Leon’s Taper
Jean Girl from Disturbia. The sound of it during the party was like, ‘wow!’ i felt like i was there.
one thing i dont understand from the whole concept of we-are-going-to-destroy-newyork is that, new york is still very much alive. in reality. new york was practically destroyed by godzilla, by crazy weather in ‘the day after tomorrow’ and then some zombies roamed fifth avenue to scare the shit out of will smith, and then the statue of liberty! with the head’s off!
new york is still very much alive eventhough it’s the end of the world.
I LOVE NEW YORK!
and cloverfied, if i must.
Stupid question, but there is one song at the party scene that is also in the trailer that you don’t mention, and I have no idea what it is. It is kind of a trance song, heavy on the synth. It has played on the radio, so I know it isn’t score filler. Can you help me out with it? If I remember correctly, it is the second song during the trailer. Thanks.
Exactly! As “TheWolf”, I’m also looking for this groovy song, I heard all the tracklist posted here and it isn’t there.
Can someone help us, please?
Thanks
I ask, I answer myself already. After some research I found the song, it’s “The way I are” by Timbaland…
The groovalicious tune that ya’ll are thinking of is Gorillaz’ tune “19-2000”.
Yeah Playlist – you got some points – but count me among those who thought JJ Abrams & Co. did a pretty good job in attempting to create a NEW monster.
Yeah it was kinda hokey – yet ANOTHER *exasperated sigh* let’s-wipe-out-NYC movie. But it had some redeeming value. it was an entertaining thrill ride – even if it did become a bit predictable towards the end.
Sure it isn’t gonna win any Oscars. It isn’t even a grade “A”. But even grade C+ and B- movies are worth the watch from time to time.
How can you appreciate a Steak if you don’t have baloney from time to time?

Anyone know the song after sean kingstons beautiful girls? All i know is it is also played in a snowboard dvd intro i peeped a long while ago and i cant remember the band.
does anyone know the song at the party, it sounds somewhat like techno, i dont believe it has any words in it.?
There is an actual soundtrack, composed of one song called Roar and it is available on iTunes just search cloverfeild. I believe if my memory is right that it is a 10 min ish song.
what is the name of the song in Cloverfield where Beth angrily leaves Rob's party. The song is played very lowly.
