Got a Tip?

‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ Trailer: J.J. Abrams Bring The Franchise To Space

If you’ve ever wondered what “Cloverfield” would be like in space, you’re in luck with “The Cloverfield Paradox,” the third installment in the J.J. Abrams science-fiction horror franchise. Directed by Julius Onah from a script penned by Oren Uziel and Doug Jung, the story centers around a team of astronauts aboard a space station who find themselves fighting for survival after a scientific experiment causes Earth to disappear and a mysterious space shuttle leads them to a shocking discovery.

Much like “10 Cloverfield Lane” kept production below the radar, with “The Cloverfield Paradoxquietly starting filming in the summer of 2016. However, the movie has been through a bit of release date drama. It was originally scheduled to open on February 24, 2017 then it was bumped to October 27, 2017 moved again to February 2nd and lastly to April 20th. It that wasn’t enough, Paramount ultimately decided to sell the rights to the movie to Netflix, but the good news is that streaming giant might be releasing it before that aforementioned April date.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In the near future, a group of international astronauts on a space station are working to solve a massive energy crisis on Earth. The experimental technology aboard the station has an unexpected result, leaving the team isolated and fighting for their survival.

Not that buzz should be a problem. Already coming as part of an established brand, the film also boasts an impressive cast, featuring David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd. Past offerings under the “Cloverfield” umbrella don’t have a good track record of keeping the cast intact by the time the credits roll, so with details sparse and a new setting to explore, will anyone be able to save them in space?

Update: in a huge surprise move, though one that some predicted around these parts, “Cloverfield Paradox” hits Netflix tonight, directly after the Super Bowl is over. No, really, Netflix confirmed the news this evening in a press release.
