Even though it would appear that states around the US are opening up in time for the summer and movie theaters seem to be on the rebound after a year of awfulness, studios are still selling off some big titles to streaming companies instead of risking it at the box office. Recently, we saw Paramount+ announce the release of Mark Wahlberg’s “Infinite,” and now, we’re seeing Sony make a deal with Amazon to distribute the highly-anticipated “Cinderella” musical remake.
According to Deadline, Amazon has purchased the worldwide distribution rights to Kay Cannon’s upcoming film, “Cinderella.” (Well, worldwide except for China, which Sony still owns the rights for.) This version of Cinderella features pop star Camila Cabello in the title role and tells the story of a young woman with massive ambitions. She teams up with her Fab G to help bring those dreams into reality. And considering Cabello is the lead, you better believe there will be plenty of musical numbers. Joining Cabello in the “Cinderella” cast are Idina Menzel, Billy Porter, Nick Galitzine, Minnie Driver, and Pierce Brosnan.
The film had been delayed a couple of times due to the pandemic, but “Cinderella” was still on the schedule for a July release. However, Amazon has yet to announce when the studio might release the film on Prime Video. “Cinderella” is the follow-up film to Cannon’s directorial debut, “Blockers.” That film was released in 2018 and became a huge comedic hit at the box office and with critics.

Amazon has been very busy over the past year buying up big films and sending them to Prime Video. Just last week, we saw the release of the action film, “Without Remorse,” starring Michael B. Jordan.” It was also recently announced that the sci-fi action film, “The Tomorrow War,” starring Chris Pratt, would be heading to Prime this summer. And now, we have “Cinderella,” though there’s no release date set for its debut.
