Got a Tip?

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ Expands Orbit To Include Wes Bentley

null

Okay, we get it. If you want to make an original sci-fi movie these days—or an original anything—you need to cast big name stars to convince studios to part with their cash. So, Christopher Nolan has done just that, lining up Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn and John Lithgow to star in “Interstellar.” All people we love too, so yeah sounds awesome. Then he started filling out the supporting cast with some…interesting…choices including “Twilight” actress Mackenzie Foy, “Homeland” actor Timothee Chalamet and “That ’70s Show” guy Topher Grace. It’s all looking pretty monochromatic here, and that’s not changing.

Wes Bentley is the latest name to join the cast and…maybe the twist of “Interstellar” is that the future has no people of color? Even though “Pacific Rim” might not have worked overall, one thing we did point out in our breakdown of the movie, is that we at least appreciated the multi-ethnic cast (as one-dimensional as they were). But really? The future of time travel and wormholes is bereft of some color? Unless this is going to be some kind of “Cloud Atlas” shit…. And we’d buy the argument that maybe it’s the right actor for the right part, but something tells us that if Wes Bentley (or Topher Grace for that matter) wasn’t in this movie, it would still work. And by the way, Bentley is the last piece of casting…

Anyway, argue and debate below. “Insterstellar” arrives on November 7, 2014. [THR]

  1. Don't worry folks! There will be a small cameo by Morgan L. Freeman as the gangsta toll collector of the wormhole. You'll have all the color you need.

  2. Nolan fans, calm down. It's not weird to point out that a big movie with a large cast of name actors has zero people of color in it. It has nothing to do with backlash against Nolan.

  3. Lol, YES. That's right kev. Nolan's too big right now. You know he only had white folks in Memento as well. Time to rachet up the backlash against him. Start making sure each article pertaining to Interstellar is critical and negative. And i know you'll tear the film apart come review time. Woohoo, LETS DO THIS!

  4. Also, when did any of Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway (maybe), Casey Affleck, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn or John Lithgow become "big name stars to convince studios to part with their cash"

  5. Where can I read that article complaining about "only white actors" in Mud or any of Jeff Nichols' films? Oh wait..

I get that Nolan now have reached so high, he has farther to fall (some critics even goes after small continuity errors in the cutting – no other filmmaker gets that treatment) but at least wait until you have seen the film before pulling the race card.

  6. "It's all looking pretty monochromatic here, and that's not changing."

Sentence made my day. Seriously, plot withstanding, that is still the whitest collection of people, come on Nolan

  7. Of all the films that feature mostly white actors, you're going to pick on this one? Gimmie a fucking break. Sometimes your articles read like they're written by someone who concern trolls on their spare time. You guys are capable of much better than this.

  8. Not that your clumsy race-baiting bears serious discussion, but the movie takes place in a dystopian future where several world governments including the US and the PRC have collapsed, widespread famine has decimated the planet, many of the characters are related to each other, and most of the terrestrial action takes place in Midwestern farmland and "the sovereign nation of Texas," so if you want something in the text to justify casting white people, there you go.

  9. Or Nolan only casts Christian Bale's ex-co stars? Between Hathaway( Tdkr)MccOnaughey(Reign of fire),Affleck( Out Of Furnace) and Bentley ( Knight of Cup) and Caine, they all worked with Bale
