Got a Tip?

Christopher Nolan Shows His Support For Theaters By Going To A Regal Cinema & Enjoying Some Movies

Christopher Nolan has put his money where his mouth is and already heading back to enjoy films on the big screen. We know this thanks to a report from Deadline and a recent tweet from Regal Cinemas about the filmmaker’s latest visit. However, he’s not going back to show his support for “Tenet.” Instead, the director is enjoying some of the other features that are available in cinemas.

In a tweet, Regal Cinemas shared a picture of Nolan attending the Regal Irvine Spectrum to take in a flick. According to the report, he actually went to see Sony’s new rom-com, “Broken Hearts Gallery.” And apparently, last week, he ventured out to watch “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Say what you will about Nolan’s unwavering love of the theatrical experience and his desire to have “Tenet” open in cinemas, at least he’s backing up his words with actions. Though, even with our admiration for attending a Regal Cinema and supporting film, we can’t fully encourage everyone else to do that, at this time. The science just isn’t there yet.

That being said, we’re going to guess that Regal gave Nolan and his crew free tickets to the screenings and who’s going to turn down free movie passes? Nolan, at his heart, is still a massive film nerd. Hell, I’d see “Broken Hearts Gallery” if there were free passes involved…and the promise that I’d be the only one in the cinema and everything was properly sanitized.

Not to throw shade at Nolan (as much as I do tend to challenge him with his steadfast devotion to shooting on film and hatred of streaming), but it has to be said that maybe the filmmaker should have bought a whole bunch of tickets for “Tenet” because Warner Bros. needs all the help it can get with its domestic box office run.

Nolan also joins Tom Cruise and other celebrities that have been publicly sharing their experiences going back to the cinema while the world still recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. There are others, most notably the filmmakers behind the upcoming feature, “Synchronic,” that wholeheartedly disagree with encouraging folks to go back to indoor screenings.

Ultimately, if you want to venture back to the theaters and you will follow all the safety guidelines (for your sake and, more importantly, everyone else’s), then you can make your own decision about when is the right time to go back. Just be safe and smart.
