Earlier this year came the news that Adam Driver — Lena Dunham’s weird carpenter ex-boyfriend on “Girls” — would be make a full-fledged jump to the big screen with “Ceremony” director Max Winkler for the period comedy “Coward.” Now it appears he’s bringing one of his “Girls” co-stars along for the ride.
The Wrap is reporting that Chris O’Dowd, aka Thomas-John, is in talks to join the 18th century England-set comedy, which follows Driver as a nobleman who is forced into a duel but chickens out — his family has a long history of losing in duels — and instead sends a criminal in his place. The criminal wins the duel then keeps racking up wins until he completely takes over the nobleman’s identity. If talks are successful, O’Dowd would play the criminal.
While it’s no secret that Driver is in demand — he’s already worked with Steven Spielberg in “Lincoln” with an appearance in the Coen Brothers’ upcoming “Inside Llewyn Davis” — O’Dowd is doing just as well. He’s got the upcoming HBO Christopher Guest series “Family Tree” as well as a cameo appearance in “Thor: The Dark World.” And that’s not even mentioning his work with Judd Apatow. So yeah, these two are ones to watch out for. No word on when production will get underway, but the casting is off to a solid start.
Winkler seems to have some heat though I do feel as though Ceremony is quite under-appreciated in the post Wes Anderson age of cinema brats. I quite liked it. Jake Johnson is aces.
