Aliens have invaded Earth…but they’ve done so in the future. And Chris Pratt is there…but from the past. It sounds like a bonkers idea for a movie already, and, believe me, it sure is when you see it. On today’s episode of The Playlist Podcast, we got to sit down with director Chris McKay and actress Yvonne Strahovski to discuss Amazon’s latest acquired action blockbuster, “The Tomorrow War,” which stars Chris Pratt as a science teacher drafted into an alien war in the future.
“To read something that was an original sci-fi movie that had a lot of heart in it, and some great characters, and a fun epic scope and scale… to me, that’s exactly what I’m looking for,” McKay said about why he just had to direct “The Tomorrow War.”
We also got to chat with the busy director about a multitude of other projects he was involved in previously, most notably, a little project for the DC Universe called “Nightwing.”
“It’s definitely taking a very long time to put that movie together, but I wouldn’t say it’s 100% dead in the water. It’s a movie that I still want to make,” McKay said. “It’s a character I love. And then it’s a world that I’m passionate about. I’ve always been a big Batman universe fan, you know, that’s the very first superhero that I fell in love with. But Robin as a character who grew from working under Batman to going on his own and becoming Nightwing and going to Bloodhaven and things like that. That journey, because I went on that journey as a comic book reader, you know, as I grew up, Robin grew up and became Nightwing, so it’s part of my history.” He continued, “this might be a little bit of a spoiler, but it would have been a little bit like a Great Santini-type movie. Somebody that grows up under somebody who is a dark mentor and then how that affects him and about the relationship…There’s the emotional story of Dick Grayson in the Nightwing movie is going to be very powerful when we get a chance to make it.”
After the interview with Chris McKay, we sat down with one of the stars of “The Tomorrow War,” actress Yvonne Strahovski. We got to touch on her mystery role during our chat and what drew her to the film.
“It was just that she’s such a well-rounded character,” said Strahovski. “She’s obviously a brilliant, very capable woman, but she also has this really incredible and powerful backstory that is really emotional that she ends up having to confront.”
We also touched on her roles in the “Handmaid’s Tale” and “Dexter,” but don’t get your hopes up yet. She was not able to confirm any involvement in the upcoming “Dexter” revival series.
“I have no idea what they’re doing with this new season. I’m not involved,” she said about ‘Dexter.’ “But I guess I’ve just kind of decided that my theory is that Harrison has grown up to be somewhat like his dad and that maybe Harrison’s killed Hannah as some like weird gift to Dexter and Dexter has to go bring Harrison back into his life to train him to be a good killer.”
“The Tomorrow War” hits Amazon Prime on July 2. You can hear the full discussion below.
