Got a Tip?

Chris Evans Says Reprising His ‘Fantastic Four’ Role In The MCU Would Be An “Easier Sell” Than Returning As Cap

It’s hard to argue that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, hasn’t been one of the MCU’s bright points. The beloved character has been the heart of the massive cinematic universe since the beginning with “Captain America: The First Avenger,” giving us a superhero with a moral compass that matched his brawn.

During a recent chat with MTV News to promote his new Pixar flick “Lightyear,” Evans was asked about potentially returning to the Johnny Storm part from the “Fantastic Four” films for a possible Multiverse appearance. And perhaps surprisingly, Evans certainly sounds keener on reprising his other Marvel Comics role than playing Cap again.

“God, wouldn’t that be great? Wouldn’t that be great?” said Evans. “No, no one’s ever come to me about that. I mean, I don’t exactly look the same anymore. That was 15, almost 20 years ago. Oh my God, I’m old. But I really love that character, but I think… aren’t they doing something now with ‘Fantastic Four’?”

“I would love it. That would actually be an easier sell to me than coming back as Cap. You know what I mean? Cap is so precious to me. And you know, I almost don’t wanna disrupt what a beautiful experience that was. But Johnny Storm, I feel like he didn’t really get his day. That was before Marvel really found its footing. So, I loved that role and, you know, who knows.”

Evans also briefly debunked a longstanding online rumor he would appear in “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” (obviously, that didn’t happen). If you didn’t already know, Evans ended the role in “Avengers: Endgame” by handing over the mantle and shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson leading to the events of “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America 4” in-development with Mackie assumed to keep the franchise going for years to come.

In the same interview, “Star Wars” was mentioned, and the actor seemed ready to jump in to play anything. “God! Would I love to be in ‘Star Wars,’ I would do anything even if I was just a Stormtrooper… I’ll take a Wookie though, that’s fine,” Evans said.

Top Gun: Maverick” star Miles Teller has also expressed interest in returning to the Reed Richards role not too long ago. It seems like most of the actors who appeared in “Fantastic Four” regret their iterations of the superhero never panned in good movies.

It’s still unclear what’s happening with Marvel’s “Fantastic Four” reboot following the exit of director Jon Watts as he’s pivoting to other projects like “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” There have been some indications a replacement director could be announced at D23 Expo in September, but we shall see.

Next month we’ll see Evans face-off against Ryan Gosling in The Russo Brothers’ big-budgeted spy action movie “The Gray Man.” There are already early plans for a prequel spinoff for his character at Netflix from the screenwriters of the “Deadpool” movies.
