Alright, after a major Marvel theatrical drought thanks to the pandemic—“Spider-Man: Far From Home” July 2019, and not another until “Black Widow” July 2021— we’re officially back in the superhero onslaught, doubly so when you consider streaming series and films happening around the same time. The reprieves will be brief, following “Shang Chi” and “What If,” Marvel’s “Eternals” is on deck. More of a would-be space opera with characters seemingly all on the level of Thor or greater, power-wise, “Eternals” is directed by Oscar-winning “Nomadland” filmmaker Chloé Zhao, who only won her Academy Awards six months ago.

Today, new TV spots were revealed, and in the newly-released featurette (see below), Marvel’s Kevin Feige says that the effect of “Eternals will redefine the Marvel Cinematic Universe entirely. Zhao’s thoughts on that bold proclamation? “I think a big part of it is that audiences will be discovering the origin of the MCU through the mythology of the Celestials,” she told Fandango this week. “I think by the end of the film, we will have a new understanding of planet Earth’s relationship with the cosmos, and also with her own inhabitants. But in that sense, it would have a huge effect on the future of the MCU.”
Many have predicted and assumed that the advent of the Eternals will somehow help introduce the existence of Mutants, or somehow give way to the explaining how Mutants have been here for quite some time, but we shall see how that develops (obviously “WandaVision” opened that up a little bit nebulously too).
As for Marvel’s famous post-credits that could tease Mutants and or all kinds of things, yes, Zhao says there will be some, two exactly. “Yes! Don’t just stay for the first one — also stay for the second one, too. They are equally as important in weight, and both have big surprises for you.”
