In an era where everyone who has ever touched a microphone or musical instrument and released at least one hit single is getting their own biopic, it actually took a little while longer than you might think for Cher to land one of her own. However, thanks to the people behind “Mamma Mia” and an Oscar-winning screenwriter, the Cher biopic is officially in development.

In a caps-lock-filled tweet, Cher was excited to announce the project on Twitter and said, “Ok Universal is Doing Biopic With My Friends JUDY CRAYMER, GARY GOETZMAN PRODUCING. THEYY PRODUCED BOTH MAMMA MIA’S,& MY DEAR DEAR Friend 4 YRS, & OSCAR WINNER..ERIC ROTH IS GOING 2 WRITE IT. FORREST GUMP A STAR IS BORN SUSPECT TO NAME A FEW OF IS FILMS”
Let me try to translate—the producers behind “Mamma Mia,” Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, are set to develop a biopic about the life and career of Cher. The film will be written by Eric Roth, who is probably best known for his Oscar-winning script for “Forrest Gump,” as well as features such as “Munich,” “The Insider,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and “A Star Is Born” (the Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga version).
It’s unclear what form the biopic will take. Will it be more of a hard-hitting drama, a la “A Star Is Born?” Judging by Cher’s decades-long career, she has plenty of drama to fill multiple movies. However, with the addition of the “Mamma Mia” producers, it also has the opportunity to be something more like “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Rocketman,” which were biopics that focused on the music and became almost anthemic in their storytelling. We’ll just have to wait and see.
It’s unclear when production might begin on the untitled Cher biopic, but obviously, this will be a major production that will have buzz.
