Check Out 10 Unused Posters For Terrence Malick’s ‘The Tree Of Life’ From A Gallery Of Over 90 Concepts

The Tree Of Life

So here we are in 2014, still awaiting the status of Terrence Malick‘s “Knight Of Cups,” his untitled music scene movie and the documentary “Voyage Of Time” (and fyi, it looks like the lawsuit around that last one is on its way to a settlement). So let’s take this moment to look back, shall we?

Design company Prologue have revealed around 90 or so poster concepts they presented for “The Tree Of Life,” before settling on the designs that eventually made their way online and into theaters (for a refresher, click here). For the most part, these are some pretty on-the-nose interpretations, with lots of trees and outer space and floating heads, and none of them standing out as the kind of stuff that could’ve stood on their own. But regardless, it’s an interesting look at how designers bang around ideas before finding the winning formula.

Check out ten posters below, out of a whopping 90 right here, along with images from an alternate opening credit sequence that was conceived but never used. [via The Film Stage]

Update: Posters removed by request of Prologue.

  1. Wow, did they ever make the right decision with the two that I've seen. These are terrible. I don't think Malick was really referencing a literal tree.

  2. Ooof these are all so bad. Thank goodness they went with the baby feet and the multiple pictures instead of these Christ Saves movie of the week posters (and yes, I get that that "Tree of Life" is Christian, but c'mon it's not "Left Behind" Christian).
