Tricky little label Varese Saraband is quietly releasing a bunch of scores from films not in theaters yet and at the top of our list is the Alberto Iglesias-penned score to Steven Soderbergh’s “Che.” There’s not a ton of music in both “Che” films, but there’s enough and “Guerrilla,” has some really nice Spanish guitar music that’s really evocative, but generally, much like the movie, the music is understated and doesn’t swell to crescendo-epic cliches.
1960/70s Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa’s “Balderrama” closes out the two films and the haunting number was left imprinted on our mind for weeks (in fact, thank god we have the tracklist wrong, we were spelling it wrong in our Google searches all along). It’s a beautiful track and as is the music of Iglesias (“Volver,” and two Academy Award nominations for “The Kite Runner,” and “The Constant Gardener”). We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Iglesisas was robbed in 2006 when his “Volver” score wasn’t nominated. Heavy-weights like Hans Zimmer (“The Thin Red Line”), Howard Shore (“LOTR”) and that year’s original score winner, 2-time Oscar fave Gustavo Santaolalla (“Brokeback Mountain”) all picked it as being one of the year’s best.
Personally, we’re buying this one right away and if you like score music, we suggest you do too. If you don’t live in New York or L.A., you won’t have a chance to see “Che” until January 2009, so this music could be your first sneak peek. Also released early, but not in theaters is Hans Zimmer’s score to “Frost/Nixon,” Angelo Milli’s compositions for Will Smith’s “Seven Pounds” and John Ottman’s score to Bryan Singer’s “Valkryie” if you feel like pretending you’re Tom Cruise in a eye patch in your bedroom a few weeks early.
