The one movie that got thoroughly kicked around at Cannes this year was Sean Penn‘s latest directorial effort, “The Last Face.” The drama was mostly roundly thrashed by critics (we called it “a preposterous and pretentious mess of a film“) but sometimes all you need to sell a movie are stars, and the film certainly has that with Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem leading the way. However, the first trailer doesn’t do much to dispel the notion that the movie is a disaster, acting as a supercut for some truly campy dramatic moments.
Also featuring Adèle Exarchopoulos, Jared Harris, and Jean Reno, “The Last Face” focuses on the affair that unfolds between a doctor and the head of a charity organization while they’re on duty in war torn Liberia. Professional! Here’s the official synopsis:
Set against the devastating backdrop of war-torn Liberia, Miguel and Wren must find a way to keep their relationship alive in extraordinarily difficult conditions battling their mutual passion for the value of life matched by the intensity of their diametrically opposed opinions on how best to solve the conflict that surrounds them.
No release date yet, but Saban Films will release “The Last Face” in the U.S. in 2017. [Variety]
