Got a Tip?

Charlize Theron Confirmed For Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’

Michael Fassbender Says There’s A “Connecting Vein” Between ‘Alien’ & ‘Prometheus’

After a few weeks of will she or won’t she back and forth and negotiations, Charlize Theron has signed on to star in Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” alongside Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace.

Ridley Scott is also producing alongside David Giler, Walter Hill and Tony Scott. Variety has no character details, but Theron has been linked previously to the roles of Elizabeth Shaw and Vickers — both prominent supporting roles — which now leaves the question open if Angelina Jolie, previously rumored, is stil in the mix.

Other actors rumored to be involved at one point include Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Arterton, James Franco and Natalie Portman. The latter two get offered everything and we’d bet everything they’re not involved (Portman, unquestionably). The former two… there’s a chance we could see them in smaller roles, especially Arterton who herself said she has spoken to Ridley Scott about the role. Unfortunately, she also has a habit of speaking a bit early on projects that might just be gestating. But with the gears turning on the film, more casting should be along shortly.

Much has been speculated about the film which is said to be not exactly a direct prequel to “Alien” but, as screenwriter Damon Lindelhof says, uses “strands of ‘Alien’s DNA” to create a film that will be “unique, large and provocative.” Pretty vague right? Well, keep on guessing as Fassbender chatted up MTV about the film and and teased that, “There’s a definite connecting vein” between “Alien” and “Prometheus.”

“When I read it, I was like, ‘Well, okay, another Alien. Where do you go with this idea?’ And then I sort of read the script, and it’s new, yet it’s in keeping with the old traditions as well. But there’s a whole new revelation within this film,” he says. He also adds that the film will likely be back-loaded with action, letting the story and characters build first. “There’s action in it,” he said, “but the intelligence is what struck me when I read it. It’s more sort of like the original ones. There are things happening and building, and the intelligence of the first two-thirds of the film gets you ready for the action.”

Lots of time to guess and figure things out as “Prometheus” won’t hit theaters until June 8, 2012.

  1. Almost certainly a more interesting role than playing the Evil Queen but hope she somehow still gets to do that as Charlize vs Julia would be fun. I don\’t really see them getting both Charlize and Angelina + Rapace and Michelle Yeoh unless they\’re turning it into some kind of female Expendables.

  2. IIt\’s an Alien movie. The only reason they\’re calling it something else is because Tom Rothman wanted to start a new franchise after the massive success of Avatar and Inception.
