‘Champions’: Woody Harrelson, Kaitlin Olson & More Star In Bobby Farrelly’s Special Olympics Comedy

In the past, the Farrelly Brothers haven’t been known for making comedies that are, well, compassionate. Their early works, including “There’s Something About Mary,” “Me, Myself, and Irene,” and “Dumb and Dumber,” among others, are notorious for their raunch and off-color humor. But times have changed, and it appears Bobby Farrelly is ready to take on a film that will likely test his comedic instincts, “Champions.”

According to Focus Features, Bobby Farrelly is set to direct a new comedy, “Champions,” which will feature a cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Kaitlin Olson, Cheech Marin, and Matt Cook. The film is an English-language adaptation of the Spanish film of the same name, and it tells the story of a minor league basketball coach who is forced to do community service and decides to help coach a Special Olympics team. 

Now, before you totally cringe at the idea of a Farrelly brother doing a film about people with intellectual disabilities (who can forget all the jokes in “There’s Something About Mary?”), the film will actually feature quite a few actors with intellectual disabilities such as Madison Tevlin, Joshua Felder, Kevin Iannucci, Ashton Gunning, Matthew Von Der Ahe, Tom Sinclair, James Day Keith, Alex Hintz, Casey Metcalfe, Bradley Edens, and Champ Pederson.

It’s been quite a number of years since Bobby Farrelly has directed a feature. Unlike his brother, Peter, who directed the Oscar-winning film, “Green Book,” Bobby Farrelly has recently stuck with TV work, helming episodes of “The Now” and “Loudermilk.” His most recent film is the 2014 comedy, “Dumb and Dumber To.”
