True crime is all the rage in Hollywood right now. While shows like “The First 48” have been fixtures on TV for years, the popularity of Netflix’s “Making A Murderer” and FX’s “American Crime Story: The People Vs. O.J. Simpson” has made the genre white-hot. And now CBS is getting in the game with “The Case of JonBenét Ramsay.”

The six-hour docudrama investigates the unsolved murder of JonBenét Ramsay, who was kidnapped from her home in 1996. In the 20 years since the disappearance, numerous books and TV specials have been produced trying to help solve this famous case. The CBS series assembles an all-star team of investigators to sit in a room and try their best at figuring out what happened that fateful night.
CBS is hoping this series becomes a huge success and they can continue to produce more ‘The Case of’ series. But the challenge will be knocking it out of the park with this first case, and then finding equally compelling material to tackle for round two. It’s still all new territory, with the folks behind ‘American Crime Story’ hoping their take on Hurricane Katrina would be just as popular, while Netflix is trying the opposite approach and is instead going to continue to follow the Steven Avery case in their second season of “Making A Murderer.”
Of course, all this could be a moot point if “The Case of JonBenét Ramsay” isn’t the hit that CBS hopes it can be. Audiences will be able to judge for themselves when the series premieres on September 18th, staring a six-night run that will end on September 25th.
