The fledgling CBS Films — homes to such failures this year as “Extraordinary Measures” and “The Back-Up Plan” — have acquired their first completed film, the Jason Statham vehicle “The Mechanic.”
Co-starring Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland, the film is a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson film about “a hitman who trains an apprentice who has a connection to one of his mentor’s victims.” The film was directed by Simon West who made his directorial debut with “Con Air” and hasn’t made anything worth talking about since. The screenplay was written by Richard Wenk (“16 Blocks”) based on the original by Lewis John Carlino.
No word yet on a release date for the film, but given CBS Films’ pace so far of about one film per season, it’s probable it won’t appear on screens until early 2011 (they have the Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton vehicle “Faster” coming this fall).
