Got a Tip?

‘Birds Of Prey’ Director Cathy Yan To Direct Immigrant Drama ‘Sour Heart’ For A24

We knew that Cathy Yan was going to get some extra shine on her young career thanks to being selected to direct the upcoming “Birds of Prey” superhero team-up film for Warner Bros. But it appears that even without that film hitting theaters, the up-and-coming filmmaker has already lined up her next project with indie studio A24.

According to Variety, Yan is set to direct a coming-of-age drama titled “Sour Heart,” which is based on a short story collection from author Jenny Zhang. The drama is set to tell the story of a young woman and her immigrant experience, as she and her family come to New York City in the ‘90s from Shanghai. The story follows the family’s ascension into the middle class, and the struggles that immigrant families deal with on a daily basis. “Sour Heart” will be co-written by Yan, along with author Zhang.

As mentioned, Yan was selected by WB after a very competitive search for a director for its upcoming “Birds of Prey,” which features Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn character that was introduced in “Suicide Squad.” That film is scheduled to be released in February 2020. Before that, Yan directed the Sundance film “Dead Pigs,” which earned her acclaim, even though the film hasn’t seen a wide release in the US.

If you’re a frequent reader of this site, you’re probably familiar with A24. The indie studio has released some of the best films of the last several years, including “Moonlight,” “Lady Bird,” “First Reformed,” “Eighth Grade,” “Hereditary,” and “Ex Machina.” The studio recently signed a deal with Apple to produce a series of projects for the tech company. However, “Sour Heart” is set to be a film that A24 will finance and release independently.
