“Castle Rock” might be the most overlooked recent Stephen King adaptation, and that’s no fault of the actual content of the series. The first season of the show debuted to pretty strong reviews and quickly became a fan-favorite on Hulu. However, unlike “It,” “Pet Sematary,” or “Doctor Sleep,” the series doesn’t have the name recognition factor of the other King properties. But in Season 2, Hulu is hoping to change things up a bit by focusing on one of the author’s most famous characters, Annie Wilkes.
As seen in the new trailer for Season 2 of “Castle Rock,” the horror anthology is introducing Wilkes (played by Lizzy Caplan) to the small town in Maine. Of course, if you’re familiar with Stephen King books or films, you likely remember Wilkes as the psychotic superfan from “Misery.” In the film version, she was portrayed by Kathy Bates, which earned the actress an Academy Award for her performance.
There is also a heavy tease of Shawshank prison, with the sign being shown, as well as the introduction of Tim Robbins to the cast, although he won’t be reprising his role from the famous film “The Shawshank Redemption.”
The new season features Caplan and Robbins, as mentioned, as well as Elsie Fisher, Paul Sparks, John Hoogenakker, Yusra Warsam, Robin Weigert, Sarah Gadon, Greg Grunberg, and Barkhad Abdi. “Castle Rock” is produced by JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot production company. Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason co-created the thriller series.
Season 2 of “Castle Rock” arrives on Hulu just in time for Halloween on October 23.
Here’s the synopsis for “Castle Rock”:
A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock. Castle Rock is an original suspense/thriller — a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.
