Just today around The Playlist water cooler, we were discussion fan theories, and more specifically, how this need to consistently speculate about every angle of a popular movie or TV show can wind up taking away from simply experiencing what the writers and directors have put together. We’re in a time where some audiences are impatient or seem to want complete answers to every question right away, leading to guesswork, which then starts to snowball into an endless cycle of maybes. And so, with Rey’s parentage left an open question mark after “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the internet wondered: could she be Luke Skywalker’s daughter, or maybe she’s the offspring of Han and Leia? Or [insert theory]? Well, you can count out at least one relation.
On the commentary track for ‘The Force Awakens,’ director J.J. Abrams reveals that prior to the film, Rey and Kylo Ren had never met, which I think should’ve been obvious already, but maybe not.
“One of the new relationships that we were focusing on was between Kylo Ren and Rey. They’ve never met but he’s heard of this girl,” the director said.
I’m sure that sentence will be deconstructed to find out what Abrams really means, particularly the latter section: where did Kylo Ren hear about her? Jedi camp?
All will be answered in next year’s “Star Wars: Episode VIII”….or not. You might just have to wait until ‘Episode IX.’ [via ScreenRant]
Until they decide to retcon things a few years from now & do a prequel spin-off film.
I expect most of The Playlist watercooler talk relates to how dumb fanboys are and how much better you are then them.
