Got a Tip?

Cary Fukunaga To Direct The Cyberpunk Feature, ‘Tokyo Ghost’

Though everyone is still waiting for the next James Bond film, “No Time to Die,” it appears that Cary Fukunaga continues to move on with his career, as the biggest film he’s directed continues to be delayed. (“No Time to Die” was originally supposed to arrive in April 2020 and is now set for October.) In addition to an Apple TV+ war series, Fukunaga has found another feature he’d like to work on, titled “Tokyo Ghost.”

According to THR, Fukunaga will helm the upcoming cyberpunk feature, “Tokyo Ghost.” The film will be based on the comic book series of the same name from creators Rick Remender and Sean Gordon Murphy. “Tokyo Ghost” tells the story of a distant future where humanity has become totally dependent on technology as a means of escape. The film follows Debbie Decay and Led Dent, two people from the Isles of Los Angeles that are given a job that takes them to the world’s last tech-free location, Tokyo.

As mentioned, Fukunaga is prepping the release of his long-awaited action film, “No Time to Die.” However, he’s currently working on the Apple TV+ series, “Masters of the Air,” which is the spiritual successor to “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” It’s unclear when “Tokyo Ghost” will begin production, but clearly, this is a huge project that could further cement Fukunaga’s status as a blockbuster filmmaker.

Previously, Fukunaga was probably best known for his directorial effort on Season 1 of HBO’s “True Detective.” He also helmed the features, “Jane Eyre,” “Beasts of No Nation,” and “Sin Nombre.” But again, as his career keeps growing, so do the scopes of his projects.

Obviously, there’s no release date set for “Tokyo Ghost.”
