Earlier today, we got our first look at Brie Larson in costume as the titular hero in Marvel Studios upcoming 21st film “Captain Marvel.” And now, just because EW loves to tease, we got a slew of new pictures showcasing the rest of this amazing cast of new heroes and old favorites.

Allow me to show my nerd just a little, as I jump into what we see in the images. First, let’s get the easy ones out of the way. In one of the images, we see another great shot of Larson in full costume as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. Then, there’s an image showing a younger, noticeably two-eyed, Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson (in his 4,684th appearance in the MCU). As we know, “Captain Marvel” takes place in the ‘90s, where Fury isn’t the eye-patch-wearing badass we know and love. There’s also another image of Carol Danvers out of costume, but sporting a SHIELD hat and a NIN shirt. We can fully expect the ‘90s references to be fast and furious in this film. And let’s not forget Lee Pace returning as Ronan the Accuser (reprising his “Guardians of the Galaxy” role).
However, in other images, we’re meeting some of the new characters. And boy, oh boy, are there some new characters. According to the report, Carol will join the team known as Starforce, led by Jude Law (who is reportedly set to play Mar-Vell, aka OG Captain Marvel). In the image, you can clearly see Djimon Hounsou (returning to the role of Korath from “Guardians of the Galaxy”) and “Crazy Rich Asians” star Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva (a member of Starforce, but not exactly the hero-type), as they approach Law and Pace’s characters.

In the comics, Starforce is a name given to a group of villains, and considering not much is known about what is being described as a “Kree SEAL Team,” perhaps Danvers realizes the group isn’t all its cracked up to be. I don’t think it’s too much of a jump to say that Starforce might be revealed to be a little on the…let’s say, un-heroic side of things.
Another image that is sure to get comic book fans all in a tizzy is the reveal of some other Marvel villains that have been a long-time coming — the Skrulls. In the film, the Skrulls are led by Talos (played by Ben Mendelsohn, who gets his own decidedly un-Skrull-like image, but is also seen in all his Skrull glory). According to EW, Talos goes undercover as a human on Earth, and works within SHIELD. “It’s not easy being green,” Mendelsohn jokes to EW.
For those not steeped in Marvel lore, the Skrulls are a shapeshifting alien race that is always up to no good, and are long-time enemies of the Kree (and thus Danvers, Law, and the rest of Starforce). Their skin tones are definitely more muted from the comics, but given that there’s a lot of green aliens in the Marvel Universe, that’s to be expected, as the MCU needs a little differentiation between aliens.
There’s also an image of Danvers in a jet, which makes sense considering her fighter pilot background. But joining her with a picture with a jet is Lashana Lynch, playing the part of Maria “Photon” Rambeau. Now, the names Photon and Rambeau are well known to us comic book nerds, as Monica Rambeau used the name Photon as a superhero in the Marvel Universe. However, considering this is Maria, and thus Monica’s mom, we can expect that any sort of real Photon appearance is way down the line. And to add to that, EW reports that in the film Maria is a single mother of a young daughter, whom we can only assume is Monica.
Okay, there you have it. A breakdown of all the images, with full-on nerd facts in tow. As you might imagine, “Captain Marvel” is a big debut film for the MCU and one that Kevin Feige and Co. are hoping can launch another massive franchise like the recent “Black Panther.” Then they won’t feel so bad about continuing on without Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, once they all die in “Avengers 4.” Obviously, that’s speculation, but its’ going to happen, right?
