Got a Tip?

‘Captain Marvel 2’ Hires ‘WandaVision’ Writer, But Original Directors Won’t Return

Marvel revealed 11 film and TV projects at Comic-Con this past summer, three more at D23, but there was barely a mention of the billion-dollar grossing “Captain Marvel” franchise except from a little throwaway aside that President Kevin Feige made at the very end, “we didn’t even mention that we’re making ‘Black Panther 2’ and we didn’t mention that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ is coming. We didn’t even have time to talk about Captain Marvel 2, by the way. I didn’t even have time to talk about the ‘Fantastic Four.’ And there’s no time left to talk about mutants.”

Well, that’s finally changing. THR reports that Megan McDonnell, a staff writer on the Disney’s Marvel-based series, “WandaVision,” has been hired to write a script that will move the “Captain Marvel” Carol Danvers storyline out of the 1990s and into present day.  No other details were revealed.

Furthermore, something we’ve speculated for a while, indie filmmakers turned blockbuster directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (“Mississippi Grind,” “Half Nelson”) won’t be returning for the sequel and instead, Marvel is apparently looking to hire a female filmmaker to helm the “Captain Marvel” follow-up film. The directors as said to be moving to some Disney+ series for Marvel instead and we can see it given their affinity for more character-driven material, but let’s see if it’s not just parting shot lip service.

“Captain Marvel” starred Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, came out in the spring of 2019 before “Avengers: Endgame” and ended up grossing $1.128 billion (a figure that “Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker” won’t reach for comparison’s sake). Larson will return as Danvers, and one presumes that Jackson will also reappear as Nick Fury, but who knows where the story will take them by 2022—the potential intended date.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will have greatly shifted by then and nearly a dozen film and TV projects will have already aired by then, “WandaVision” in particular, one that seems like it’s going to impact the entire MCU.

There is one major connection there too. “WandaVision,” due in late 2020, will feature the character of Monica Rambeau who first appeared as a child in the original “Captain Marvel” film as a supporting character and daughter to Danvers’ best friend. She’ll now be grown up, played by Teyonah Parris (“Chi-Raq”) and potentially morphing into one of the superhero character Rambeau transforms into in the comics (characters alternatively known as Captain Marvel, Photon, Pulsar, Spectrum and more).
