Concept art for “Captain America: The First Avenger” has arrived from AICN and evidently it’s been confirmed as the same concept art that JoBlo laid eyes on last week (congratulations? click on the art for a larger version).
Franky, it looks hella ghey not very great and apparently Joe Johnston and the designers have opted to go running in the opposite direction of “cool looking,” but that’s maybe Captain America for you. He’s a defender of American freedom and shit, he’s not supposed to be Batman or Captain Cool Guy.
He’s also been seemingly fitted with fake superhero jeans (501s dungaree) and suspenders, but hell, it was the 1940s and it was the style of the time.
The only part of the concept art costume that seems to work is the headgear which is more of a helmet and mask meshed together. We can buy that a super solider in WWII would wear a helmet (the fruitcake-bright colors in the middle of combat not so much).
The artwork is straight out of something cornball like “The Phantom,” with Billy Zane which stands to figure since they’re supposed to be from that same golden era, pulpy comic-book milieu, but why does it still look so silly? He looks like he’s about to walk into a GQ magazine fashion shoot.
“Captain America: The First Avenger” co-stars Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan and Toby Jones and hits theaters July 22 2011. It shoots this July in the U.K. Hopefully they will have de-ghey-ified the costume by then, but we’re not counting on it, based on the taste of the guy that directed “Jumanji” and “The Wolf Man.”
I wouldn't say it looks "hella gay." It actually looks like a straight guy designed it, which explains why it's so ugly.
I gotta ask, given your hyperbole about the costume (ever read ULTIMATES? – it's nearly identical), what exactly would you have them do? And don't give me that "something cool" bullshit. Tell us, specifically, what you'd have done with the costume of a patriotic 1940's-era superhero.
(It's easy to be a cynical smartass online – as it takes so much less effort than actual criticism and reporting – but this place is starting to look like CHUD. That's why I stopped visiting that site.)

There's nothing wrong with the costume, it's Evans. He has no authoritative presence. Can you actually picture him being a leader in that costume or even in The Avengers, leading around Norton and Downey? Hell no.

For a site that is supposedly for cinephiles, there seems to be an awful lot of reporting on superhero movies. Writers using terms like gay and retarded to make fun of movies?Writers asking people to "eat a thick rod of shit"? Really?
If only there was cinephile-like news every day, no? then we wouldn't have to bother. If only there was a story about Whit Stillman everyday.
We feel your pain and maybe our frustration comes out in the writing. Plus while we are film snobs, we do like to write about lots of different things and we do have varied taste.
No one should be telling anyone to eat shit either, I agree, but we all lose our tempers. I pretty much had it with the Parnassus apostles last year and my ugly side came out. It happens.
Bizarrely, adding wings to the captain's head would butch shit up significantly.
