Set to be the longest Marvel movie to date, the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War" will be crammed with familiar faces from the MCU, and some newcomers in Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland). But one character you won’t see is the villainous Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, who last made an appearance, very briefly, in the post-credits sequence of "Avengers: Age Of Ultron." The filmmakers have wisely decided he the character be a jarring addition to the already crowded picture, whose concerns are very much Earth-bound.
"…we’ve got so much cosmic-ness waiting, we are more than happy to keep it waiting. Because, you know… ‘Civil War’ is such a grounded argument, that you don’t want to go, [whispers] ‘Actually, that’s not very important because there’s a space man coming.’ We all know there’s a space man coming, but it’s going to blow this argument out of the water if you bring it up. So all that has to stay far enough away," the film’s co-writer Christopher Markus told Cinema Blend. And that makes a lot of sense. With Captain America and Iron Man facing off, it would make their showdown have far less stakes if a cosmic bad guy suddenly showed up.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have previously said ‘Civil War’ is akin to a "psychological thriller," and point to some intriguing touchstones as reference points. “The movies we’ve been referencing a lot on this one are ‘Se7en,’ weirdly,” Joe Russo told Fandango. “ ‘Se7en,’ ‘Fargo,’ just as far as we’re not making comparisons in terms of quality we’re just talking influences.”
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. was far more blunt in his assessment: “This is ‘The Godfather‘ of superhero movies!”
