Cannes: Michael Fassbender & Marion Cotillard Go To War In The First 2 Clips From ‘Macbeth’

MacbethWas the ghost of Banquo hovering over the set of Justin Kurzel‘s “Macbeth”? “[It’s] a very loaded and strange. You know the whole ‘don’t say Macbeth’ thing [theatrical superstition where actors avoid saying the play’s name inside a theatre]? Well, so many things started to go wrong during the production,” the director told ScreenDaily about the making of his impending adaptation of “Macbeth” set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival any minute now. “You could just feel stuff was hovering over us, and that’s strange because you’re determined not to get sucked into it. But it just does. When Lady Macbeth is summoning the witches, it is kind of like you’re actively summoning spirits. It’s a strange dance.”

We’ve seen a brief teaser clip from this new version of the Bard’s tale starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard as the husband and wife leads of the movie, but now The Weinstein Company has released the first full two clips from the movie. In case you weren’t paying attention in high school, “Macbeth” is a murderous tale of how ambition, guilt, paranoia and fear lay low Scottish nobility. Here’s the official synopsis:

MACBETH is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader (Michael Fassbender) brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition, set in war torn Scottish landscape.

“Macbeth” is already due to land in French cinemas on November 4th and in the UK on October 2nd, so judging by that date, it’s probably a safe bet that TWC will release the film stateside around that time. Presumably North Americans will be able to see it at places like Telluride and the Toronto International Film Festival, as surely the Oscar-drum banging will take place all year. Check out the two clips below.

  1. Can\’t wait for the general USA release. There\’s so little good Shakespeare on stage here (and theater costs a fortune) films this this and the Hollow Crown brings the Bard to the masses at a reasonable cost.

  2. they do the same thing with foreign films, i.e., The Grandmaster. i guess it\’s not really bait and switch if the projected demographic (18-24yos) is too stupid to realize what kind of movie they\’re going to watch. very cynical marketing campaign, imo.
