Got a Tip?

Cannes Directors’ Fortnight Poster Gets Some Modern Cowboys, ‘Tabu’ Director Miguel Gomes To Head Critics’ Week Jury

nullWell, it’s not quite the instantly hangable and collectible poster that the Cannes Film Festival unveiled last week, but the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar is often known for it’s slightly more adventurous programming and their one sheet for this year’s festivities certainly plays to that notion.

Nope, no classic cinema stars here, just a more abstract image that plays to the spirit of the programming. Here’s the official blurb on just what exactly it all represents:

Two persons in the middle of the desert, under a distant western sky.

The epitome of Adventure. Two modern-day cow-boys in a SUV.

Or, why not, the vehicle of two filmmakers scouting locations, who briefly, forget their solitude to confront their experience and their destiny under a Fordain sky.

The Quinzaine des Réalisateurs this year will be a meeting place for creative artists in the midst of desire.

And a series of adventures, comedies and tragedies of today.

Life, indeed, but under skies bigger than life, as Nicholas Ray would put it…Movies, in short.

Meanwhile, in the other Cannes program — the Critics’ Week sidebar — “Tabu” director Miguel Gomes has been tapped to head the jury. The filmmaker’s last effort charmed many on The Playlist staff, with his black-and-white, memory infused, classic cinema throwback landing on a few Best Of 2012 lists so we’ll be curious to see what suits his tastes from the competition slate this year.

The Directors’ Fortnight runs from May 16-26 and the Critics’ Week from May 16-24. Poster below.null
